Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Whatever Craig and Charlie Reid were doing in the six years between Persevere and its predecessor, Hit the Highway, the time wasn't spent developing a radical new sound. Persevere is instantly recognizable as a Proclaimers album, thanks to Charlie Reid's insistent acoustic rhythm guitar, a sparkling lead guitar bringing out the melody, and, foremost, the Reids' utterly unmistakable voices. Even if they'd come back after an absence of decades, it is unlikely that anything remotely like them would have appeared in the interim. The twins show no sign of losing their rare knack for composing memorable melodies with pugnacious lyrics. The best moments of Persevere combine both: witness the exuberant demolition of the British ruling party's values on "Land Fit for Zeroes," the jeering debunking of our celebrity-driven culture of self-pity on "Everybody's a Victim," and the eloquent reconciling of their fierce Scottish patriotism and internationalist politics on "Scotland's Story." The Proclaimers are defiantly unfashionable, immensely contrary, and altogether unique, and their return is as welcome as it is overdue. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars Better late, June 14, 2001
By A Customer
Even though the Proclaimers seem to be on the same album release timetable as Peter Gabriel, it is always well worth the wait. Once again the twins put out a solid top to bottom effort. The best thing about the Proclaimers is they are consistent; they don't try to remake themselves constantly like U2, but instead stick with the formula that made them what they are. That formula is great song writing, powerful vocals, crisp harmonizing and lyrics about women, booze, love and family. If you liked their past efforts, you should buy this disk immediately. I wish the the U.S. would appreciate this group for their greatness, but I'm kind of glad it hasn't; I still get to see them up close in small venues with reasonable ticket prices.

It's been seven years since The Proclaimer's last effort, 1994's "Hit The Highway" and they are back with their signature sound. They have much to offer this time out with one of the finest rock and roll songs I've heard in quite a while "There's A Touch". Should be a smash hit, but I'm guessing it will be overlooked--which is just fine! I don't need to hear it overplayed! There are other great songs here like "Sweet Little Girls", "How Many Times", "Everybody's A Victim" and "Don't Give It To Me". Many of the tracks have the usual wit, social commentary and irony that comes with The Proclaimers. I liked this disc better than "Hit The Highway", and "Persevere" seems more focused and urgent. If you have kept up with The Proclaimers, this will definitely satisfy. Now, The Proclaimers just need to release cds more often!

4.0 out of 5 stars Talk about a return!, May 31, 2001

I fell in love with these guys many moons ago. Long before that darn song from Benny and Joon. Nevertheless, they deserved the success. The next album was definitely uninspired and qhite honestly forgettable. Well, many years later, without much fanfare or airplay, Persevere is released. I have never wanted this band to make it "too" big, but if they do it from this album I will be thoroughly overjoyed. I think that there is maybe one or two songs that were not instant joy, but the rest of the album is so fresh, fun and full of life, it makes up for the two. They seem to have fully integrated theire country pop folk sensibilities and their clever views on society into some truly fun summer music.
