Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
After a long winter of discontent, So Addictive finds Missy Elliott hoping to initiate hip-hop's summer of love. Miss E's third album is dosed with feel-good flavor and has more guests than the VIP section of the hippest hip-hop hot spot. Buddies Method Man and Redman bark across the bridge of "Dog in Heat"'s canine funk. Jay-Z and Ludacris feature on two different versions of "One Minute Man"'s scathing soul. Synths tweak and creak in rhythm as Missy unleashes a dreamy diss of those hopeless suitors who unload their cargo before they've sparked her ignition. "Take Away" features Pony man Ginuwine on a hypnotic slow-burner heavily reminiscent of Art of Noise's "Moments in Love." When left to her own devices, as she is on "Lick Shots" (which jangles like Django Reinhardt on downers), Missy comes on like Schooly D, a fearless, female gangsta licking shots against anyone who dares cross her. On "Scream a.k.a. Itchin'" she breaks into a soprano. A 4/4 stomp is stamped indelibly across the ecstasy-holler song "4 My People" (featuring Eve). Overall, it feels as if producer Timbaland has muted his experimental leanings on this outing with his favorite muse in favor of submersible club tracks. Musically, the bhangra beat bop of "Get Ur Freak On" is the standout. The spiral timing of "Whatcha Gon' Do," the fret-skipping "Slap! Slap Slap!" (featuring Da Brat), and the sunken, drunken funk of the not-so-subtle X-hex "X-Tasy" are tied at a close second. --Chris Campion

5.0 out of 5 stars Missy Rips The Hip-Hop Rule Book Apart!, October 26, 2003
By Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
When Missy Elliott's sophomore album came in the form of "Da Real World," many fans were disappointed. She returned in 2001 with her third album, the majestic "Miss E...So Addictive." She silenced the critics and became one of the biggest female Hip-Hop stars of all time in the process. From the minute you play this CD you see a much tougher and independent Missy, who is taking no s**t from no one, and living her life the best way she knows how - through music. We're taken on a journey of discovery and revelation, along with aspects of love, sex, partying, drugs and much more.

The album opens with "So Addictive (Intro)" which features Tweet. Missy introduces her new superstar on the first track wonderfully with a 50 second cut about not needed drugs to get high. We then move onto the absolutely funky "Dog In Heat." I knew from the minute I heard this song that I loved it because it's such a hip-swayer! You just can't help but sway your head from side to side as you groove to Method Man's explicit rap, before you grind to Missy's catchy verses. The chorus is explosive, and this so should have been a single! "One Minute Man" follows, which was the big hit of summer 2001. Ludacris is awesome on this, and it's one of Missy's all-time classic joints. "Lick Shots" is definitely an album highlight with some crazy lyrics and some hilarious beats. The album's lead single, "Get Ur Freak On," follows. With one of the most addictive beats in history, this is truly a classic and possibly the greatest Hip-Hop song ever.

"Scream A.K.A Itchin'" sees Missy rapping like no tomorrow, before breaking out into opera after a few seconds! It sounds crazy, and it is - but in that absolutely amazing way. You can feel your bones jumping to this song, it's just incredible. "Old School Joint" is a brilliant song which sees Missy go back to the old school. She prepares young listeners before who could snigger at the reputation of old school music, but by the end she knows they've caught the groove and the beat. It's a fast song, and the beat flows brilliantly. "Take Away" features Ginuwine, and is a ballad! You'd never think of Missy doing a slow song in a love way, but of course she pulls it off and it's just a great chill-out track. "4 My People" is one of the greatest tunes of Missy's career. The verses seem to bounce up and down with the chorus, before Eve jumps in for one of the funniest raps I've ever heard. She's so out of control and rude that you can't help but laugh.

"Bus-A-Bus Interlude" features Busta Rhymes and it's absolutely hilarious. "Whatcha Gon' Do" features Timberland on vocals along with Missy, and it's the craziest song on the album. The way the murmurs are used as the beat is genius. "Step Off" features one of the most memorable baselines on the album. A soft Far Eastern beat infuses the song, with a sort of modern hi-tech computer whizz-kid feel. It's very strange, but it sounds so catchy and perfect. "X-tasy" is the song with drugs references, and features a swirling and soft beat that makes you feel like you're on drugs! "Slap! Slap! Slap!" features Da Brat and Jade. The beat is of Missy going, "Mmmm...yeah!" It's annoying at first, but it gets better. Then it stops and it's just another typical and brilliant cut. "I've Changed - Interlude" features Lil' Mo, before we are treated to a fabulous Remix of One Minute Man to close the album out.

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

There must be about ten different Import version of this album, featuring so many different songs in different orders. This doesn't matter really, because all you need to know is that this was one of the greatest albums of 2001, and Missy really ripped the Hip-Hop rule book apart a bit more. Lauryn Hill did this with 1998's "The Miseducation Of" and so did Missy with "Miss E...So Addictive," but in totally different ways on different subjects. This is possibly my favourite R'n'B/Hip-Hop album ever and I recommend you buy it straight away! Easily Missy's greatest album.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Addictive" Album From Missy, July 20, 2001
By "cdman27" (Omaha, Ne United States) - See all my reviews
This is the first album I've bought from Missy Elliott, and after listening to it, I HAVE to get the other 2!! These songs have funk all over them, even the ballad-like songs. My supreme favorite of this album is the reason I bought it:"Get Ur Freak On". I cannot get enough of this song! Other favorites include "Lick Shots", "Step Off" and "Whatcha Gon' Do". The songs I did not care for were "Take Away"(I love Missy and Ginuwine, but the song was too sappy),"X-tasy", and a bonus track "Movin' On". This song belongs in a hip-hop church, not a rap album. This album is a real winner; I can't wait to get the other 2. As she says in her intro "My Album Is So Addictive". Buy it and you'll be hooked, too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Missy gets back to basics on "addictive", June 2, 2001
By John "baaaadjohn" (south carolina) - See all my reviews
In 1997, hip hop would never be the same again. Here comes Missy Elliot in trashbag gear and freaky beats. Breathing new life into hip hop's stale industry, Missy's been doing this for years. Shes written and produced for such acts as Aaliyah and Mariah Carey long before her groundbreaking debut Supa Dupa Fly. Instead of your average scantily clad female rapper, missy is a full figured gal with a powerful prescense and a taste for the otherworldly. Fans who fell for her debut and may or may not have liked her sophomore effort Da Real World, will certainly enjoy So Addictive, as it brings back the experimental elements missy is known for. While, Da Real World was a dark, rather monotnous and boring album, addictive kicks supa dupa fly's attitude back in high gear. With more listenable, radio friendly songs, addictive explores funky hip hop sprinkled with off the wall electronic beats and out there effects. The highlights include the first single "Get Ur Freak On", "One Minute Man", "Lick Shots", "Old School Joint", and "4 my People". Five reasons to buy this one, folks. The others are good in theyre own way, but these five sound like potential singles to me. While its not a perfect album, it contains some of the most original songs youll hear in 2001.
