Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

When, as a teenager, Brian Culbertson released his debut album, Long Night Out, in the early part of the 1990s, it was obvious that he was a child of smooth jazz, with a definite penchant for commercial musical hooks that hang together and shine. Subsequent successes showed that he had that talent in abundance, but those records seemed rushed to strike the smooth-jazz iron while the radio play was hot. Nice & Slow varies from his recent efforts; as the title suggest, it's a mellower 11-song effort, but it seems Culbertson also used the title as a mantra in putting these songs together, as they are among his best compositions--Culbertson hasn't put out a more complete album since his debut. The evidence abounds, from the delicious ballad with Dave Koz, "I Could Get Used to This" to the funky call-and-response Midwest groove on "Get It On." The young keyboardist uses (and gets the best of) his guest stars on this album, among them trumpeter Herb Alpert, fellow keyboardist Jeff Lorber, and R&B star Kenny Lattimore. --Mark Ruffin

5.0 out of 5 stars A SMOOTH JAZZ - MUST HAVE CD, January 4, 2002
By "highflyingadore" (Washington, DC (area)) - See all my reviews
Brian Culbertson is young and talented. This is evident by the content of his latest release. He is smart enough to work with some major smooth jazz talent, like Dave Koz, Herb Alpert, Jeff Lorber, Tony Maiden, Ricky Peterson, and Kirk Whalum. He also has some of the best studio musicians in the business working with him too, like Alex Al, and Lenny Castro. This cd combines smooth jazz with a touch of r&b, resulting in a satisfying blend (I Wanna Know, Nice & Slow, Someone). Brian's keyboard style easily jams with the funky grooves (Get It On) as well as the soft and smooth ones (Just Another Day, I Could Get Used To This). This is by far one of the best cd's I've purchased in 2001.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice&slow/Brian Culbertson, November 24, 2002
By Joe Payne (Houston, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
What more can I say about Brian? This guy is simply incrediable. When you play cut#8 "together tonight"you definately will cause you to bring out the champange and candles and injoy it with the one you love. Then get knocked of you seat by his increditable ren- dition of "I wanna Know" with the help of saxman Kirk Whalum. I took this CD to work with me one friday(thats my longest day at work,an to break the monoply and anything else ,I bring a couple of CD's and my boombox)I dropped in Nice&Slow, cut #8 and all my co-workers wanted to know who that was.after learning who it was ,they said they had to have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep 'em coming!, June 13, 2003
By Timothy Wall (Plymouth, MA United States) - See all my reviews
Brian is absolutely wonderful at what he does, creating smooth, yet upbeat, jazz, and this is greatly shown in this album "Nice and Slow." I first learned of this Jazz great through listening to a Jazz station and hearing a song, "You'll Never Find" which quickly became my favorite of all time. I rapidly purchased the album "Secrets" and was also very satisfied with the rest of the album. Later on, i heard "Get it On," an upbeat song with the perfect balance of smoothness, and the same thing happened,I bought "Nice and Slow" and found his best album yet! He is not a one hit wonder at all,
he is instead a competent artist that makes each and every song sound wonderful. And according to his thank you's on the CD leaf, it was "the most fun [he] ever had making an album," and one can tell by how much effort was put into the music, how it was produced, which is never rushed or made just to sell, but to induce an aura of relaxation or even stress-relief whenever the CD is played. I also find his music to be the perfect soundtrack for driving through the city at night (Boston especially). I reccomend this one to anyone who feels that upbeat smooth jazz is to their liking, or that simply wants a fantastic album by an enthusiastic, talented artist
by the name of Brian Culbertson.
