Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen play good girl/bad girl sisters who suddenly find themselves on a high-speed chase escaping crooks, attracting hunks, and wreaking havoc in this lightweight comedy set in the Big Apple. Ashley plays high school scholar Jane Ryan, an overachiever with her sights set on winning a college scholarship competition. Mary-Kate plays her sister, Roxy, a rebellious teen truant who would rather be a rock star than a student. Since their mother's death, the sisters' relationship has been strained. Now their worlds collide when a day in Manhattan forces Jane and Roxy to join forces, overcoming their differences to battle an international smuggling ring while trying to make it in time for Jane's competition. While the script is predictably bland, viewers will enjoy the comedic strengths of Eugene Levy (Serendipity, American Pie) as Roxy's ubiquitous truant officer. Though the twins manage some decent slapstick, their sensuality, sexual innuendo, and suggestive disrobing is disappointing. DVD bonus features include some hilarious bloopers and alternate endings. (Ages 10 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Product Description

Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen take their sister act to the next level with the delightful comedy New York Minute. Top student Jane Ryan (Ashley) heads to Manhattan for a college-scholarship competition. Her rebellious twin Roxy Ryan (Mary-Kate) goes along to crash a video shoot. But anything can happen - and does - in a romp involving a pursuing truant officer (Eugene Levy), a smuggler (Andy Richter), hunkalacious guys (Jared Padalecki, Riley Smith) and the girls' realization that when the chips are down, a sister can be the best friend of all.

5.0 out of 5 stars this one's for the fans...., July 6, 2004
By MollyRK (Chicago) - See all my reviews
If you are not a true, long-time fan of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, you really don't have any reason to watch this movie. "New York Minute" is for those who have grown up alongside Mary-Kate and Ashley and will enjoy seeing them in a movie that, yes, illustrates how much they have grown over the years. Anyone else will laugh, sneer, and tear it to shreds, but fans will respect it for what it is: a fun, lighthearted comedy. Personally, I went to see it the day it was released, and I loved it. I think a lot of people just looked at how highly publicized this film was and expected it to be something off the charts--the Olsen twins' explosion into theatrical production and adulthood. I'll admit that when I saw how much it was being promoted and how much time and work the Olsens were putting into it, I thought it was going to be a very successful film with a high public response. While it wasn't anything like that, it certainly showed a nice amount of improvements from the girls; it was a good plot, impressive acting, and highly entertaining. Compare this with some of their home videos like "Getting There" and "When In Rome," and you just might appreciate this movie a little more. I think Mary-Kate and Ashley did a great job; they showed their potential for comedy and proved that once they take the spotlight off them a little bit and focus more on the other aspects of the story, their film is greatly strengthened.

It's a real shame that "New York Minutes" fared so poorly at the box office; I imagine it was a real blow for the girls, but they'll get through it. They'll move on. Their 1995 feature film "It Takes Two" didn't do so hot either (only pulled in about $20 million), but the VHS and DVD releases sold very well; I have a feeling that the same thing will happen once this film comes to DVD in August. It is exactly the kind of film in which only the real fan can witness the evolution and the maturity in these girls. Yes, they have grown up a lot and have great things ahead of them, but for someone who despises them you're best off staying away from this movie...we all know what you think. Let the loyal followers of Mary-Kate and Ashley watch the movie and give their opinion; they're the best ones to comment because they'll give the twins the fairest shake for their efforts and everything they put into this movie.

Again, I liked it a lot...I thought it was funny and enjoyable, with a far better plot and acting job from the Olsens than I have ever seen before from them. Look for these things instead of the Oscar-worthy material that the girls weren't even going for in the first place, and you just might be surprised.

5.0 out of 5 stars New York Miunte is the best movie out., May 8, 2004
By A Customer
I saw this movie with my mom and we usualy don't like the same stuff. But we both loved it. It was so funny and exciting. I can't wait for another MK&A movie to be made. I own all but 1 of their movies. So I just had to see it. It was cool that when I watched it, it was early enough that no one was in the theater because everyone was at work or at school.

1.0 out of 5 stars awful, even by teenaged girl standards, November 10, 2004
this movie cannot be enjoyed, even with the ironic detachment best used when watching the Vanilla Ice movie. my girlfriend and i went to see it expecting to get a chuckle, but i ended up in burning, painful tears. the movie is full of all sorts of inconsistancies and patronizing flaunts to the audience. why are they in a Toronto subway in NYC? why would the one girl ditch school and make a big deal about it, and end up at a sugary-rock concert where everyone there is younger than her? and how does the olsen twin riding on the back of a bmx get from downtown to columbia in twenty minutes? why does the poor lady in harlem let the girls have all those trashy clothes for free? nevermind, you're not supposed to notice that stuff. and why would the awesome eugene levy and andie richter take roles in this movie that just scream, "hi, i want to ruin my career and here i go!"
the worst thing is, this movie is so predictable that it isn't; that is, you would think the film couldn't possibly make the ending so obvious. but they do.

i don't know why anyone thinks the olsen twins are so hot. they look like trolls. that's it. they've ruined movies for me forever.
