Sacramento's !!! (aka "CHK CHK CHK") first issued their debut self-titled album on GSL in the summer of 2000. Met with immediate critical acclaim, it became something of a cult classic and earned the group the distinguished title "Newcomer of the Year" by CMJ magazine. The group disbanded as sonn as the album hit the shelves, only to eventually reform, relocate to NYC, and release the follow-up, Louden Up Now, on Touch and Go Records, before moving to Warp in 2007. After hearing just a few tracks on !!!'s self titled album I was very impressed. I'd attempt to describe !!! as being the clash meets funk meets dance. I'm a big fan of the groove feel to their stuff. Funky bass lines meet equally funky guitars and horns complete with percussion breakdowns all with a decidedly non mainstream feel. The lyrics and vocal style are uniqe and keep this act somewhat mysterious. Toe tappin' stuff.

Indie groovester's !!! embrace the funk as whole heartedly as any electric rock band I've heard, but a few setbacks infect the potentially ridiculous flow. The vocals will be somewhat of an acquired taste, which wouldn't be a problem if they did not suffer typical over-indulgences. Ditto to the actual grooves themselves, as !!! concentrate on hammering riffs past the comfort zone rather then composing them. Ultimately the lack of restraint works wonders around some tight guitar playing, warranting the band future notice.

This CD is amazing. I bought it after my friends had said that it was great. When I first listened to it, I was weirded out. It is different music with saxaphones, guitar, drums, prolly a drum machine thrown in, just about everything there is. It all sounds amazing. Intensify is one of the best songs on the CD. All of the music is really dance-able. I just bought there new CD yesterday, and it is equally as good. All in all, this is a must buy. After you listen to it for a little while, you wll be taken hold. I am going to see them live on July 18, with Modest mouse. I suggest everyone try and go.
