Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

In telling the story of Gustav Mahler's socially tempestuous wife and fellow composer-songwriter Alma, director Bruce Beresford faced great challenges. But they would seem to pale in comparison to the task of composer Stephen Endelman, who was variously asked to highlight Alma's largely unfamiliar songs, economically echo Mahler's most sweeping works, and compose an original score that meshed seamlessly with the Mahlers' music. Though purists may grumble somewhat, Endelman has largely succeeded here, capturing the rich drama and emotion at the heart of both Mahlers' disparate music while compacting it to fit the medium's constraints. Soprano Renée Fleming voices Alma's "Bei Ist Es Traut" and "Laau Sommernacht" in new recordings with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, as well as Gustav's "Ruckert Lied No. 5" backed by the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. Edited catalog Vienna Symphony performances of Gustav's Symphony no. 3 conducted by Claudio Abbado and Symphonies nos. 5 and 6 by Pierre Boulez are also featured, along with the feverish violin music of Gypsy musical savant Janos Bihari, performed here by Roby Lakatos and Ensemble. Endelman's underscore is used sparingly, forging measured emotional links betwixt the Mahlers' own stormy compositions. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars great movie and story - see it soon, August 14, 2005
this is a great movie about the life of alma mahler/schindler. her life and her work are inspiring - it's too bad that more people haven't heard about her. however, such is the story with many powerful women of the past. hopefully the future will not be the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, March 16, 2006
I had no idea of Alma Mahler's composing talents until I listened to this CD! She is very different from her husband who is heavier and moodier. Her music is lighter and sentimental at the same time. Listen and enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars renee fleeming sounds sublime, but to little her from, August 3, 2003
By "montserratblackmaddona" (gastonia, NC USA) - See all my reviews
Sure renee fleeming's voice was giving the ears a treatment of the silky and the beauty. When you listen to the soundtrack you then find her voice is only present on three short tracks.A little more imagination they should of had.For renee fleeming they should have more used.It happends all this cd is,except for renee fleeming's contribution,is a hospodge of mahler music that has been for the most part already recorded to death anyway.Where was the vision and the fire with these recordings. Are they still trying to turn more people away from classical music.I must also say that the cover art is ugly and the eye sore that gauges the eyes.Furthermore to much blue on blue to make a vomiting hue!!!I gave it two stars instead of one because of the magic of rennee fleeming's singing and the intelligence of her interpretations.Alas, even renee could not totally redeem this recording due to the fact that the three songs renee sings are so short they don't even count together as ten minutes. I wouldn't buy this with money i found on the ground!!!!! Try another cd from amazon instead peace out!!!
