Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Darren (Jason Biggs of American Pie) is convinced that he'll never know love, since his one true love moved away during high school. To cheer him up, Darren's best friends Wayne (Steve Zahn, Out of Sight, That Thing You Do) and J.D. (Jack Black, High Fidelity) hook him up with Judith (Amanda Peet, The Whole Nine Yards)--little suspecting that Judith will tear their friendship apart. Judith wastes no time in taking over Darren's life, exiling his friends, and burning his beloved Neil Diamond records. If only Wayne and J.D. can bring Darren back together with his high school sweetheart (Amanda Detmer), who's about to become a nun. Saving Silverman is unquestionably of the There's Something About Mary school of comedy, throwing together absurd characters and over-the-top gags (for example, a scene of Darren getting butt implants, per Judith's orders). It doesn't quite balance everything, but Black and Zahn are engaging comic talents. Also featuring R. Lee Ermey as the boy's deranged high school football coach, whose advice continues to guide their lives, as well as a surprise appearance by Neil Diamond himself. --Bret Fetzer

From The New Yorker
Two brilliant comic actors, Steve Zahn and Jack Black, team up as friends who try to persuade their pal (Jason Biggs) not to marry the fiancée from hell (a sexy and cunning Amanda Peet). Director Dennis Dugan moves the story along swiftly and sloppily-the gags are thrown at the audience like pies-but it's the inspired pairing of Zahn (an alluring ringleader with boundless energy) and Black (a natural big-hearted Bozo) which gives the movie its circus appeal. -Bruce Diones

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Edgier Rated R-Version!, November 8, 2001
By Robert Lopez (California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This movie was great to begin with, but they wanted to release a racier R-Rated version to compete with Road Trip and American Pie! They succeeded, and actually the extra R-rated footage makes total sense!

Added R-rated scenes include;

*Longer, racier romp scene with Zane Black and the Call-girls they hire to take pictures and frame Silverman with! ;)

*And a scene at the Laundromat (After his girl throws him into the Ocean) Jason Biggs gets an eyeful of his new girlfriend, as she quickly changes in front of him. But he tries to be a gentlemen because he knows he is falling in love.

The new 3 minute footage isnt as raunchy as "Roadtrip" but it's a definite plus! There wasn't more you could add to the film to make it better, it was already a classic college film!

4.0 out of 5 stars A movie worth watching!, January 22, 2005
By L Gontzes (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Saving Silverman [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Definitely a good movie, Saving Silverman, brings to the screen exactly what the title implies: the story of two buddies who in an effort to hook up their friend (and third member of the group) with a new girlfriend end up introducing him to the wrong girl. Now they must try and undo what they themselves helped set up. Along the way, they get into all sorts of trouble resulting in a great comedy!
Jason Biggs, Jack Black, Amanda Peet and Amanda Detmer (both of whom are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!), and the rest of the cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
On the negative side, the Neil Diamond element, with the singer himself appearing in the film, was a poor choice; not that interesting and not that funny.
Saving Silverman is simple enough, nevertheless, it is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs.
Strongly recommended for an evening's entertainment along with Road Trip, Old School, the Girl Next Door and of course (!!!) the American Pie trilogy.

Saving Silverman is a laughing riot from start to end. After many years, have I seen such an amazing film with amazing performances. Jack Black stands out as the best guy in the film. He can't make you stop laughing. Steve Zahn gives an amazing performance as well. This laugh riot is a great entertainer for the entire family and a great pick for frineds. A must see and a must buy. Go for it. Trust me, you will laugh your bones out !!!
