Product Description

Product Description

With parallel audio and video outputs (for display in two rooms), Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround decoding, CD-R compatibility, HDCD precision filtering and decoding, and Toshiba's stellar ColorStream component-video outputs, this Cinema Series model is well equipped to bring any high-end music system or home theater to life.

The player employs an advanced 10-bit/27 MHz video DAC to virtually eliminate image-degrading artifacts, as well as Video Black Level Expansion circuitry, which lets you choose to set the reference black threshold cutoff to Normal (7.5 IRE) or Enhanced (0 IRE). Choosing the Enhanced position from the onscreen display expands the overall contrast range in the picture, resulting in richer, deeper blacks as well as finer tonal gradation and gray scale reproduction. All new Toshiba DVD players include the capability of reproducing "blacker than black" PLUGE signals, a critical feature for maintaining the optimum brightness setting in a properly calibrated home theater.

Reflecting Toshiba's commitment to exemplary audio performance and the versatility of its products, this model features HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) precision filtering and decoding, a process that provides true 20-bit audio resolution from the growing number of HDCD-enhanced discs. The patented HDCD precision filtering process also enhances the playback sound of conventional CDs. With HDCD decoding, a Toshiba DVD player is literally transformed from a DVD-Video player that also plays CDs into a DVD player that doubles as a superb audiophile-quality CD player, capable of providing the full sonic benefits of the approximately 3,000 HDCD-encoded CD titles now available.

Ease-of-use and viewer convenience has always been a top priority in Toshiba DVD players. For example, all models feature icon-based onscreen displays, as well as a FIRST SETUP menu that presents a series of simple onscreen questions to consumers and then automatically customizes their DVD player to best serve their home theater needs. The FIRST SETUP menu quickly configures the DVD player for 90 percent of all home theater applications in a simple and straightforward manner that does not require any consultation of the owner's manual.

Another Toshiba first is the company's Strobe Picture Viewer feature, which lets you arrange and view action images in successive order by selecting the number of picture "samples" desired and varying the time between each successive image.

The SD4205 also includes a newly redesigned fluorescent illuminated remote with a toggle switch design, eight-way compass cursor, and Virtual Remote key. When the Virtual Remote key is pressed, an easy-to-read onscreen remote display appears as an overlay on the video image. This remote lets you access key DVD playback functions onscreen, directing commands entirely from the compass cursor of the handheld remote. This feature provides ideal access to primary player operations in low-light home-theater environments. A remote confirmation feature adds to the convenience of remote operation, sounding a beep whenever a command has been received.

Product Description

The Toshiba SD4205 five-disc DVD changer offers HDCD decoding for deeper bass and clearer, more detailed highs and vocals, while its PLUGE technology creates blacker blacks for more richness. The SD4205's Spatializer N-2-2 Virtual Surround Sound creates realistic surround in two-channel stereo systems and its ColorStream component video outputs make for a better picture with compatible televisions. This model is one of the few DVD players available with a built-in DTS decoder as well as a Dolby Digital decoder, plus Toshiba's advanced RTD video noise reduction technology. Convenient features include CR-R playback, DVD/VCD/CD playback, DVD/CD text compatibility, remote confirmation, picture zoom and parental lock.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for DVD, bad for CD's, October 5, 2001
It has a lot of features and functions for the DVD player, but none as a CD player. The instruction booklet doesn't even mention the CD playing aspect of the machine. I guess this is understandable since the only thing it will do with CD's are play them one at a time in forward order. You can't program CD's to play one after another, you can't skip to a particular track, you can't skip backwards, etc. I had bought the 5-disc carousel so that I could continuously play CD's, but this player won't do that. It won't repeat a CD and you have to press play again to get the next CD to play. I'm returning this because I really wanted a full featured DVD and CD player. This is only a full featured DVD player.

A great 5-disc DVD player. Easy to setup and get going. Lots of great features such as angle control. Great easy-to-use remote control. Music plays great including CDR discs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get it....now!, September 6, 2001
By A Customer
As I understand it, this model has been discontinued as Toshiba moves toward MP3 players. For the price and the features, I say 'Get it...now!!'.

At first I thought coupling a Toshiba Cinema Series television with this Cinema Series DVD would be overkill and almost cancelled my order. I'm glad I didn't. I have a 5-disc Technics CD so I'm only using this unit for the DVD. The unit works fantastically with my Toshiba 32A60 through the video ports. The zoom is great, the slow and fast motion are great, the remote is fully functional. Both the TV and DVD have S-Video and ColorStream ports but I've maxed my electronics budget for this month so I'll have to wait to buy the necessary cables. My television is connected to my Technics surround sound system which is fine for me; the sound is fantastic.

The only negative I have is the autoplay feature --- the unit plays as soon as the carousel is closed. I haven't figured out yet how to turn it off.
