Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Produced partly under the aegis of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, this hourlong documentary provides a solid overview of the Crescent City's formidable '50s and '60s rhythm & blues influence through portraits of three of the festival's most enduring draws. It helps that Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, and the four Neville Brothers are contemporaries whose careers have intersected numerous times, although the program's concise format of interviews and live Fest performances never takes full advantage of those associations: all six musicians came up through the ranks as teenagers, and have performed and recorded together in various configurations. More casual listeners may wonder why the lesser-known Toussaint leads off the program, but the gifted pianist, songwriter, arranger, and producer brings a rap sheet that fully justifies the spotlight. Indeed, our lone complaint is that hearing his songs condensed into rapid-fire medleys just whets our ears for a fuller set. Dr. John and the Nevilles are reliably fine, of course. --Sam Sutherland

5.0 out of 5 stars The jazz festivals finest, July 28, 2001
By A Customer
The New Orleans Jazz fest has over 500,000 fans attending which is 100,000 more than the first Woodstock. Dr John, Allen Toussaint and the Neville Bros are just three of over a hundred acts appearing. They have been appearing repeatedly year after year because of their draw and add to the flavor with their New Orleans type style. It's called a Jazz Fest but it's much more. This video brings you into the festival as Ed Bradley gives a little history of the festival, New Orleans and the musicians and then you see the live performances of these three amazing acts. The quality of the filming and sound make you feel like you're there. The dvd has some great enhancements w/extensive bios, discography and facts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Legends Live on this DVD!, January 22, 2002
By A Customer
This is a sensational DVD of a great Jazz concert. Of the three major stars who perform, my favorite is the Neville Brothers who simply destroy the audience on their renditions of Fire on the Bayou and Crazy Love. The DVD features, including background interviews, biographies and more, are all excellent additions.

Seeing Dr. John, who hasn't lost one beat, sing "Right Place, Wrong Time" and "Goin Back to New Orleans" is another rare treat, as well as a surprise visit by Bonmnie Raitt. This DVD will be treasured by jazz and rock fans and I whole-heartedly call it a "must-have" for any good DVD music collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars not a bad deal for some quality nawlins music, July 8, 2007
Live videos from latter 90's of some fave New Orleans' artists at the annual Jazz Fest with intros by the late CBS 60 Minutes correspondent & music aficionado Ed Bradley.
