Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
From the Runaways to the Donnas, the garage has served as a safe haven for women who would rather be rock stars than sleep with them. The latest quartet of girls to strap on electric guitars, throw on a pair of scuffed-up Converse sneakers, and howl like maniacs comes from the small town of Robertsfors, Sweden. Like the finest work of fellow Swedes the Hives and Division of Laura Lee, Sahara Hotnights' brash debut album runs exclusively on heavy riffs and even heavier attitude. They roll out the hairy '70s punk guitars for "Alright Alright (Here's My Fist, Where's the Fight?)," talks hair-yanking trash on "Only the Fakes Survive," and does a bang-up early Blondie tribute with "Keep Up the Speed." Explosive, indeed. --Aidin Vaziri

5.0 out of 5 stars Hello daddy, hello mom, I'm your J-J-J-J-J-J Jennie Bomb, January 9, 2002
By "riotboy" (Edinburgh, UK) - See all my reviews
I first heard of Sahara Hotnights 2 years ago when a Swedish friend of mine made a mix tape for me, which included the amazing 'Drive Dead Slow,' from their first album. I bought the album, and fell in love with them.

Then last year I was at a Donnas show, with Sahara Hotnights supporting, and fell in love with them all over again, although I was disappointed that most of the songs they played were off their new album, which I hadn't yet heard. So after the show I asked Maria when they would be releasing the album in the UK (this was in May), and she told me it would be coming out in July. Well, not too long to wait, I thought, and contented myself with a copy of the brilliant single "On Top Of Your World."

July came and went. As did August, September, and October. By November I just couldn't wait any longer, so off I went to Stockholm to pick up a copy of Jennie Bomb from their native country.

And what a fantastic album it is! This ranks as one of my favourite albums of last year, alongside The White Stripes' 'White Blood Cells', Kristin Hersh's 'Sunny Border Blue', and Muse's 'Origin of Symmetry'. Sahara Hotnights play songs that are full of energy, emotion and passion. The stand-out tracks for me are the pop-punk of 'No Big Deal', the soaring 'Only The Fakes Survive', and the aforementioned 'On Top Of Your World', and there isn't a track that I don't love.

With hindsight, it may have been more cost-effective to order a copy from Amazon instead of travelling all the way to Sweden. And that's what you should do. Now!

3.0 out of 5 stars This is good, but they're GONNA be great..., March 16, 2003

Part of this terrific "new" wave of female rockers, Sahara Hotnights...you just gotta love that name...put together a fairly decent album.
The group is tight, the tunes speed along briskly and many of the melodies are hummable.
It's not a great album, but it almost is. It lacks maybe a little better production, or one to two killer tunes...it's a difficult-to-define something that the girls just miss.
Having said that, I leave with two thoughts:
1) They're only going to get better. Listening to this makes you want to hear their next one...
2) You can better believe I'm going to BUY that next one too! This is a band to root for...

4.0 out of 5 stars Jennie Bomb, February 1, 2004
By "superball9" (Arlington, VA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jennie Bomb (Audio CD)
Sahara Hotnights might be the latest Swedish import but they certainly mark themselves as one of the best. These four ladies bring classic punk rock hooks with just enough of a pop sensibility to make them more palatable to the masses and easier to digest than other like-minded Scandinavian bands - The Hives and The International Noise Conspiracy. *Jennie Bomb* certainly makes the aforementioned boys jealous of the girls' firepower instantly exploding with eleven songs in thirty-two minutes. "On Top Of The World" and "Fire Alarm" are from the punk album No Doubt never made as lead singer Maria Andersson comes off as a prettier Joan Jett fronting the Ramones. Sahara Hotnights are posed to break big with *Jennie Bomb* and it won't be long until their name is mentioned with the same reverence of other grrrl rawkers Sleater Kinney and L7.
