Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

In 1825, transportation was transformed by a clumsy little locomotive in England that chugged along at 12 miles per hour. Within a few years, train tracks crisscrossed the planet - making the human race mobile. Locomotion: The Amazing World of Trains hurtles down a track of discovery to trace the impact of all rail travel on society. It's an epic ride aboard the Iron Horse, with changeovers to the Twentieth Century Limited and Japan's Bullet Train. En route, archival footage of trains and spectacular scenery from around the world capture the romance and enterprise of the railroad. All aboard!
Vol. 1: Engines Of Enterprise - America's first big business was the railroad, deciding the destinies of millions.
Vol. 2: Taming The Iron Monster - Early railway construction methods were perilous, until brave men learned to move mountains.
Vol. 3: The War Machine - From the Civil War to Hitler's defeat at Moscow, trains expanded the scale on which war was fought.
Vol. 4: Magic Machines and Mobile People - Society was remade by trains that first huffed and puffed. Today trains hurtle like speeding bullets.

4.0 out of 5 stars trains and history, September 29, 2005
a very good movie for the person who wants to know about the development of trains. This is not for the young child, it is very good for information for reports for school and as a teaching aid for geography or history lessons.
a good well made movie for the older person

4.0 out of 5 stars Railroad History in a Nutshell, September 21, 2002
As a 'Live Steam' addict, found this to include a number of International historical viewpoints that added to my appreciation of Steam Locomotion and its role in world history.
The second episode - on the strong British Isles contribution to this advance in technology was important, my perspective had been shaped by the American Steam experience.
If you are into Steam and the Industrial Revolution - this is a 'must have' in your collection to share with your friends; or just to gain a more Global insight into this 150 years of History.

4.0 out of 5 stars The impact of railroads., June 29, 2007
I was expecting a history in the technological development of railroads; instead, the series focused primarily on the social implications and economic impact brought about by the railroads.
