Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Extermination is all about staying alive. You are Dennis Riley, a U.S. Marine and member of the elite Special Forces Recon Unit. Your mission is to take out infestations of monsters and mutant hordes before they do the same to you. Along with action-shooter play, the game includes an infection feature. A vaccine is available, but you'll have to outmaneuver the boss monsters and make it to a health station to get it, otherwise you'll face certain death. Extermination comes with its share of gore, and the soundtrack ratchets up the tension. Gameplay is action based. You can jump and roll in an effort to evade enemy infestations, or use your weapons, including a smart, customizable SPR4 assault rifle.

Product Description

With an arsenal of weapons slung on his back, the hero treads through blizzard-blinding snow, through ill-fated corridors of an abandoned laboratory and more. Players perform actions while the scene is in motion, creating unbelievable scenes. Through the combination of action, adventure and gruesome effects, Extermination will have gamers anxiously immersed as they wipe out creepy predators.

4.0 out of 5 stars Addictive and fun, August 6, 2001
By M. Fulkerson (Portland, Oregon) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Extermination (Video Game)
The rest of these reviews pretty much sum up the gaming experience of Extermination, i.e., if you enjoy Resident Evil you will most definitely get into this game. The storyline carries along nicely, the graphics and sound are good, the weapons and battles are cool and the overall atmosphere is creepy with a menacing ambience that sets a great tone. The only quibbles I have is the voice acting (think the first Resident Evil. Yes, it's THAT painful and EXTREMELY laughable. I mean, if a buddy of yours died, would you non-chalantly say, 'Damn'? Why is it so hard to get good voice acting in a video game??) and the camera angles. There are a few points in the game that are so blindingly annoying because of the awkward positions that it is nigh on impossible to point yourself in the right direction (when you climb into the crashed plane and attempt to leap off of some crates hanging in the air you'll know what I mean). With these few points aside, this is a game worthy of playing. Don't buy it, though, just rent it as it's only a good 5 hours long and the replay value doesn't add up to much (collect all 15 dogtags and you get to play through with more ammo, weapons and health, which doesn't mean much since the monsters take more damage the second time through!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Does Cindy know about Sonia??, June 21, 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Extermination (Video Game)
Yep I gave this game 5 stars, because I absolutely loved playing it. The story is the same old virus/mutation saga, but nonetheless it is intriguing, well developed and the never gets in the way of the game. You are a USMC in an elite group sent to find out what's happened at a remote Antartic research station. From the get go there are problems as your plane inbound takes a hit and you find yourself divorced from the rest of the team.

Once you gain entry into the research station, the game begins to develop its rythymn...slow at first and then look out, a veritable monster feast for you or them depending on your reflexes.

One of the aspects of the story that I enjoyed the most was the interplay with the main character and a woman named Cindy, who appears early on in the game offering cryptic assistance as you discover what a world of hurt awaits in the research station. One of the other great things about this game (for me) is that there are no arcane puzzles to solve, just find the things you need and you are off and running. Save terminals, weapon ammo, and healing stations are well placed and allow you to keep going without endlessly repeating the same tired scripts.

I owned Cold Fear prior to playing this game and I have to say that I would much rather play Extermination than Cold Fear. Cold Fear is a great game, but lacks the depth of environments, monsters, and story line that Extermination contains.

From start to finish I found the game appealing, appropriately difficult, and easy enough to play without being too easy.

The only real gaffs in the story relate to Sonia's demise. You'll wonder about it too once you get there. And then there's the reporter, who's not a reporter, who emerges alive after being in a room with a bad monster. He appears twice and then not again, even though the info you collect suggests that he's a bad dude that needed to be taken down. He's still out there....

Great game, lasts longer than 5 hours for those of us with moderate game skills and is just plain fun. Plus...it's cheap...!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Extermination, Or what I learned at the Polar Cap..., November 26, 2001
By John Keenan (Atlanta, GA. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Extermination (Video Game)
A very enjoyable, follow the nice Marine around and shoot ooze spitting worms, kinda game. I just love shoot'em ups, and more so those that feature the 'hero' moving around, not total first person, with only a gun showing in your hands. The graphics are very good, and the sound is fantastic, especially piped through your stereo system. Lots a shooty. My only beef with the game, and this is true of alot of these types of games, is at times it is very difficult to control the dude, especially in tight spaces... The POV gets kinda loopy in tight spaces, with the environment graphics getting in the way and causing the 'hero' to act spastic. Also, this game does not offer the wide range of weapons of say a Metal Gear, as all of the weapon upgrades get 'kludged' onto the assault rifle.

The plot is thin, and the dialog is a bit stilted, but hey, this ain't supposed to be Hamlet...

A good shoot'em up. Maybe better to rent it a couple of times from Blockbuster than owning.
