Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

America's first family of dysfunction, the Simpsons, appear in all their depraved glory in this wonderful DVD compilation of their show's premiere season. Fans accustomed to the slick appearance of the later episodes will be delighted by the rougher nature of these earlier episodes, when the characters weren't as well defined (Homer isn't quite as dumb as he is in later seasons) and the animation was still evolving. This only adds to the charm of these 13 episodes, which begin with "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire," the December 1989 Christmas special in which a down-and-out Simpson family adopt Santa's Little Helper. Throughout the season, familiar faces are introduced, as we catch first glimpses of Smithers, Mr. Burns, the Flanderses, and Patty and Selma. Highlights of the season include "The Crepes of Wrath," in which Bart is sent to France as an exchange student ("Don't mess up France the way you messed up your room"); "Bart the Genius," in which Bart ends up in a school for the gifted; and "Krusty Gets Busted," in which Bart's lifelong animosity with Sideshow Bob begins. --Jenny Brown

5.0 out of 5 stars More information on this incredible release., July 2, 2001
By William McBurnett (Austin, TX, Y'all) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Simpsons - The Complete First Season (DVD)
This set represents the first of an expected 12 (more?) seasons of the Simpsons to be released on DVD. The current plan is to release 2-3 seasons a year. The second season will be released in time for Christmas.

Since the first season was shorter, this first disc has many extras. First, all of the shorts from the Tracy Ullman show will be there. Also, there will be a "lost" episode included.

Fox must be commended in releasing these discs. When they were preparing to release the discs, they went to the fans, and asked how we would like them released. As season packs? How many extras? How often? Rarely does a publisher care that much.

Specific Contents:

There are 48 shorts from 3 seasons (1987-1989) of the Tracy Ullman Show.

The first season (1989-1990) includes:
7G08 Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire
7G02 Bart the Genius
7G03 Homer's Odyssey
7G04 There's No Disgrace Like Home
7G05 Bart the General
7G06 Moaning Lisa

7G09 Call of the Simpsons
7G07 The Tell-Tale Head
7G11 Jacques To Be Wild (aka Life on the Fast Lane)
7G10 Homer's Night Out
7G13 The Crepes of Wrath
7G12 Krusty Gets Busted
7G01 Some Enchanted Evening

The Simpsons is the longest running comedy, longest running prime time animated series, and is definately some of the wisest, best written comedy and satire ever put on TV. God Bless Fox for giving them all to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, July 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Simpsons - The Complete First Season (DVD)
Oh my God. When I found out about the Simpsons Season 1 Dvd's I fell of my bed. I'm so happy, because the Simpsons is the best show in the world, anyway I think the 1st season is the 3rd best. The first two being 3 and 11. Okay, so the episodes are... 1. SIMPSONS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE - When bart get's a tatto, marge has to use the family's christmas money on a removal, and Homer doesn't get a bonus, Homer gets a job as a Mall Santa. 2. BART THE GENIUS-Bart cheats on a IQ test and goes a new school. 3. HOMER'S ODYSSEY - Homer get's fired and goes on a safty kick. 4. THERE'S NO DISGRACE LIKE HOMER - After a picnic homer thinks the family needs theorapy. 5. BART THE GENERAL - Bart leads a battle against Nelson. 6. MOANING LISA - Lisa is sad, but cheered up by Bleeding Gums. 7. THE CALL OF THE SIMPSONS - the Simpsons get lost on a camping trip. 8. THE TELLTALE HEAD - Bart steals a statues Head 9. LIFE ON THE FAST LANE - Marge considers having an affair. 10. HOMER'S NIGHT OUT - Homer get's caught dancing with a stripper. 11. CREEPS OF WRATH - Bart goes to Paris. 12. KRUSTY GET'S BUSTED - This is the episodes were Sideshow Bob frames Krusty. 13. SOME ENCHANTED EVENING - Homer hires a burglar to babysit the kids. This is great set for new viewers trying to catch up. Or old to go down Simpson memorie Lane
