4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent West coast rap, April 6, 2006
By BazBillinger (California) - See all my reviews
I found out about this record through a friend. Not expecting much, we played it through his tight sound system in his car, and I was astounded by this CD. It's not a timeless classic, as it definitely sounds like 2000-era West Coast rap, but it's a great example of it. The CD lacks a bit toward the last third of the album, but it closes well and ,overall, these songs are solid. The artists on here are mostly interchangeable and kinda anoynymous, but their lyrics are actually pretty good LA rhymes, and none of the rappers on the CD are bad. More recognizable artists like Ras Kass, Yukmouth, and Sylk-E-Fyne (damn, remember her??) make some great appearances, and make a good CD.

The main thing I got out of this compilation was the beats - they range from good to amazing. The opener, "Spit Venemous," probably has THE MOST beautiful and gangsta violin sample ever used in hip hop history (no joke), and is amazing to listen to if you're puttin it in the air, seriously. Other great instrumentals are "Gettin Paid in Cali," "Three Deep," "Get That," "Full Body Teflon," and closer "World Keeps Spinnin." The beats are incredible and the artists, while no Games or Snoops, do them justice with good flow and style. I thought they were all better than anything I've heard from Mac10 or WC in a good while.

This album isn't perfect, and it definitely sounds like the 5 years old it is, but it sounds great, has some EXCELLENT tracks, and as a compilation, it made me want to hear a lot more from these dudes. They're mostly unknown, but this makes a perfect soundtrack to an LA night. Blaze to this one.
