Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Cross 1970s smut poet Rudy Ray Moore with '90s comedic rappers the Afros, marinate them in malt liquor, and what do you get? Afroman, the first hip-hop-flavored novelty act of the 21st century. The self-proclaimed hungry hustler's unabashed take on American rap from a blaxploitation point of view consists of a laid-back delivery and funky yarns loosely flowing over wah-wah guitar grooves and Hammond organ riffs. It's guaranteed to amuse some listeners and offend many, many more. One glance at The Good Times' track listing should help you decide into which camp you'll fall. The subject matter of tunes such as "Because I Got High" (also featured on the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back soundtrack) and "Let's All Get Drunk" is readily apparent. But it's all good in the 'hood. Afroman and crew sound like they're having a great old time laying it down, and at least one song on this album will make you laugh. --Rebecca Levine

5.0 out of 5 stars COMEDY AT ITS BEST!!, August 30, 2001
By Wildcat1974 (LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA United States) - See all my reviews
Afroman is HILARIOUS!!!
Don't come at this album thinking you're going to hear hip-hop at its finest, or even serious music. Although "The Good Times" evokes frequent memories of Too Short, Nate Dogg and hip-hop of the mid-80s, Afroman takes things to a whole 'nother level.
The debut single "Because I Got High" is only the tip of the iceberg. From his frequent jaunts about his hometown of Palmdale, CA and its abundance of malt liquor, white kids to beat up and beautiful women (to paraphrase in the interest of decency) to his delightfully ghetto hybrid of Bay Area and Southern hip-hop, Miami booty music and Negro Spirituals (if you can believe that), Afroman takes every conceivable Black ghetto stereotype and blows it to the stratosphere in such a way that you can't help but fall on the floor, guffawing.
You will not, I repeat, WILL NOT enjoy this album if you take it seriously. If you are the discriminating hip-hop enthusiast/purist and you embark on this "ghettorific" journey without turning off your Wack Music Radar, you WILL be highly disappointed.
There are a number of ironic things about "The Good Times" -- number one, although this is clearly a case of a bunch of Looney-Tunes having way too much fun in the studio, the fact is, the album just exudes FUN. Number two, although they're not trying to set the world on fire and change the music industry, they are probably the most unique artists currently out. The most ironic thing is that the brothas can actually SING (at least, they could if they really wanted to)!!
Treat this album as our parents and grandparents treated the Richard Pryor albums. Hide it from the kiddies (you definitely do not want them subjected to the language and subject matter presented), but enjoy this guilty pleasure for yourself.
For those who consider themselves above this type of music, consider this: Once I came down off my laughter high, I thought of other possible angles, different, more intellectual ways of interpreting what's being said beyond the obvious, and if you think more profoundly about it, "Because I Got High" speaks not just of the ills of drug abuse, but any other drugs (of sorts) that we use as crutches, that we subconsciously use to hold us back, such as sugar, sex, alcohol, cigarettes, or in my case, FEAR.
Give it a shot. You might just enjoy yourself. And if so, you'll REALLY enjoy the website.
P.S. It works especially well on days when nothing seems to go right and you need a pick-me-up. There's no better therapy than a good belly laugh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reluctant Fan, September 18, 2001
By "amazondotcomhater" (Brunswick, Georgia USA) - See all my reviews
OK, for the record, I'm a 48 year old white male. I'm married and a father of 2 grown children and have 3 grandchildren. I own my own business and I think I'm somewhat educated. So, why in the world do I like this album? I have asked myself this question everytime I listen to it. I guess it's because the guys who made it appear to have had a heck of a good time doing it. The rhymes are fun and the beat is simple and catchy. There are some raunchy "...man from Nantucket" type of lyrics that made me bust out laughing. I especially enjoyed my wife's reaction to the songs.Though she gasped and turned scarlet, she laughed in spite of herself. Surprisingly, I liked every song on the album and found the inclusion of "Hush" a real treat. Look, this isn't U2, R.E.M., Burning Spear or Bob Marley. This is a bunch of folks who have produced an album of good, dirty, infectious fun. I like (love?) the album and highly recommend it to anyone 18 and older. Afroman, I anxiously await your next effort and hope my recommendation doesn't cause you grief from your friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, original, December 13, 2001
By MJN76 "mjn76" (Chicago, IL, USA) - See all my reviews
"The Good Times" succeeds because Afroman throws caution to the wind and produces an album that is often catchy and amusing. The subject matter ranges from casual drug and alcohol use to women and poking fun at racism. In the end, the end result is fresh and original. After a few listens, it's hard to forget this album.
