Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
More than merely a headbanger's take on A Star Is Born, Rock Star is, like all great Hollywood middlebrow fare, actually "inspired by a true story": the saga of an Ohio salesman/Judas Priest tribute band vocalist who one day found himself taking Rob Halford's place in the spotlight. But whether its music is big-hair throwback or merely ahead-of-the-curve '80s retro-hip is hardly a matter that will cause quantum theorists sleepless nights. Not surprisingly, the film's soundtrack sounds both distinctly virtual and marketing-department honed: a mix of modern rockers (Everclear's hard-pop title track, the Verve Pipe's "Colorful") and '80s vets (Bon Jovi's genre-defining "Livin' on a Prayer"). Steel Dragon, the film's fictional headliners, feature era vets Jason Bonham on drums, Zakk Wylde on guitar, and vocalist Jeff Scott Soto giving star Mark Wahlberg something to lip-synch. They re-create a frighteningly credible faux-'80s pop-metal ethos that ranges from the big-ballad Bon Jovi-isms of "We All Die Young" to the pounding, metallic Priest-cloning of "Livin' the Life" and "Blood Pollution," and the anthemic "Long Live Rock and Roll," the latter in a ham-fisted performance that begs to be subtitled "(But Please Retire Soon)." It's all enough to make long-suffering heavy metal fans cry out, "Why hast thou forsaken us, Spinal Tap?" --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Gimme, Gimme, More Rock and Roll!!!, August 31, 2001
By Charles Tucker "wctinmd" (Baltimore, MD United States) - See all my reviews
True rock and roll will never fade away. Mark Walberg did not do the singing for the film, dispite some articles saying he
took lessons and did his own singing. Thankfully, the movie
producers went on a worldwide search to find the best 80's style
rock and roll musicians. The soundtrack has a great line up with
Kiss, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, The Verve Pipe, and many more. What stood out to me was that the producers put together a band,
who never played together before, and pulled it off brilliantly.
Steel Dragon has two lead singers, Mike Matijevic and Jeff Scott
Soto. Most people have never heard of these guys. Mike Matijevic was in a band called Steelheart, and the band split up
after piece of the stage fell on him, causing him to be hospitalized for a number of months, after a 100% recovery, the band was no more. His voice has such range, and is clear at all volumes, quite amazing considering the style of music. His top single was "I'll Never Let You Go", that song is what most people remember him by. Jeff Scott Soto did a lot of cover band work, singing Ozzy tunes and such. He sounds like Gene Simmons of Kiss a little bit, and has a great voice that compliments Mike Matijevic's range and contol. All things said, if you like great vocals, heavy metal or hard rock, new, and never been over played on the radio kind of music, than this album is right for you. Lets all hope that when Mark Walburg promotes the film as the lead vocalist, he gives some credit to Mike Matijevic and Jeff Scott Soto for providing such heart pounding, high screaming, and true 80's heavy metal rock'in, that make this album a must have for anyone who likes to rock!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Movie rocks, soundtracks rocks!, October 15, 2001
By Matthew Vierling (Cordova, TN United States) - See all my reviews
First, Steelheart is NOT Steel Dragon (although Steelheart's singer does sing some of the songs). Second, Mark Walberg didn't sing in the movie - he lip-synched everything over the vocals of Mike Matijevic (Steelheart) or Jeff Scott Soto. Still, I think he gave an incredible performance in the movie. Steel Dragon (the fictional band in the movie) is in reality Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist), Jeff Pilson (Dokken's bass player), and Jason Bonham (the son of Led Zepplin's drummer), and Nick Cantonese (guitar). These musicians also appear in the movie, and do a good job. The six Steel Dragon songs on the soundtrack are solid and raucous and anthemic, with plenty of melodic hooks, screaming guitars solos, and lots of bottom end bass and drums. Steel Dragon covers the old Ritchie Blackmore/Ronnie James Dio song "Long Live Rock and Roll." The great legendary Sammy Hagar even wrote one of the songs - Stand Up - performed by Steel Dragon. Modern bands such as Everclear and The Verve Pipe adds songs to the CD, along with 80s rockers like Bon Jovi, Ted Nugent, Motley Crue and KISS.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Soundtrack Ever!, December 26, 2004
By Sean Parauka (Orange, CT United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After seeing the hit movie, "Rock Star" I longed to get my hands on the phenomenal soundtrack. Remember all those excellent songs you heard in the movie done by Steel Dragon? All of those songs are included on this soundtrack (Livin The Life, We All Die Young, Blood Pollution, Stand Up, Wasted Generation and Long Live Rock and Roll). Those tunes are outstanding done by the real band. Included in the soundtrack are outstanding tunes by other famous Heavy Metal bands such as KISS with "Lick It Up", Motley Crue with "Wild Side", Bon Jovi with "Livin On A Prayer" and many more. And remember that song Mark Wahlberg sang at the end with his band in that night club "Colorful." That song is here, too and that song is outstanding.

This soundtrack is the ultimate. It's pure rock and roll, has out-of-this-world guitar riffs, banging drum beats and outstanding vocal performances by all the contributing singers.

For those people that love the movie, now own this CD. I got this for Christmas and absolutely love it.
