Biography

Chicago-based alternative metal ensemble SOiL formed in 1997 around the talents of vocalist Ryan McCombs, drummer Tom Schofield, bass player Tim King, and guitarists Adam Zadel and Shaun Glass. They released their debut EP, El Chupacabra!, in 1998, followed by the full-length Throttle Junkies in 1999. Their sophomore release (Scars) found success both nationally and internationally through two… Read more in Amazon's SOiL Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Straight-ahead yet emotive, testosterone-fueled rock, SOiL's impressive debut boasts 13 strong songs, all with staying power. The propulsive rhythms of the infectious, melodic, and intense title track are at once edgy and heavy, while "The One" is like a cooler Creed, with "Black 7" a brooding, more powerful and modern Danzig. Though Scars was produced by Johnny K, the seeming architect of the new "Chicago sound" that began with Disturbed (and SOiL are not unlike their Windy City counterparts, especially on "Understanding Me") that's not to say SOiL doesn't have its own identity. The Midwestern quintet grooves hard and consistently with a pleasing combination of modern metal stylings matched with old-school influences and a nice attention to detail. From the sexy groove of "Need to Feel" to the more evil "Wide Open," to the punky rawness of "The One," SOiL cover a lot of ground without losing the thread, marking the darkly provocative Scars as an auspicious, affecting, and coolly commercial beginning. --Katherine Turman

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best ever..., August 18, 2005
By Evan (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
True Score:4.8 a couple songs toward the end could have been better
Replay / Value: 5.0 always something good to listen to no matter how many times you've already heard it.

I love many cd's but no matter how great a cd seems to be at first the routine of listening to the same songs repeatedly makes even the best cd's dreadful. I've had Soil's cd for 4 years now, seems like longer and could be, I bought it when it was first sold. Still enjoy their sound. It's probably safe to say after all this time SOIL is my ultimate favorite group in my ultimate favorite genre.
The best comparison I can make on Soil is to take what is good about Godsmack's industrial vocals and style of music(on Godsmacks good songs). The music is loud, energetic, thickly layered, strong, heavy and dark.. perhaps a little like Spineshank? Lyrics aren't generic so a wonderful job of writing their own words. The drums are particarly powerful, like metalica, and push my sub hard.
As pleasant of a recording and well mixed as you can get for hard metal recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Successful meld of Metallica/Creed creates unique sound, May 28, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Driving guitar riffs, real rock drum beats, rambunctious growling vocals from Ryan McCombs, Soil will chase the staleness of new rock away. Pulling inspiration from the best of Metallica and placing a modern edge on it, Soil downright rocks in a unique yet familiar tone that any metal-maniac will enthusiastically toss their hair to. In `Unreal' there is a vague resemblance to Creed, but more towards what Creed should have done to get it right. Heart pounding metal in `Breaking Me Down' and `Halo'; contemplative and clear vocals in `Need To Feel' and `Unreal' without loosing the rock edge, headbanging guitar riffs in the chorus of `New Faith' and `Two Skins', to the dark feelings invoked in `Black 7', you really don't want to miss out on this CD if you like ROCK.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing really special, but solid all the way through, October 20, 2001
By Wheelchair Assassin (The Great Concavity) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Soil provide further proof of the pervasive influence that Alice In Chains have had over the hard-rock genre. Although I occasionally get irritated over the glut of grunge-influenced bands clogging the airwaves, my love of Alice In Chains and Soundgarden makes the trend of similar-sounding bands not an entirely bad thing. Fans familiar with the dark, almost bluesy ambience of Alice In Chains will definitely recognize that quality on "Scars." From the grinding guitars and brooding, occasionally shouted vocals, it's all here. The good news is that Soil deliver their sound very competently and efficiently. The roaringly infectious and heavy opening numbers "Breaking Me Down" and "Halo" are the standouts on this album, combining the grunge guitar sound with catchy rapcore vocals. The rest of "Scars" contains more of the same, with the band rarely sounding hugely original but always sounding energetic and musically proficient. So Soil can be added, along with such other newcomers as Pete. and Dust For Life, to the pile of derivative but talented post-grunge bands. If they can add some more of their own ideas to their music, Soil have the potential for greatness.
