Product Description

From the Manufacturer

DEWALT DW980K-2 12 Volt XRP 1/2-Inch Heavy Duty Adjustable Clutch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit

From the Manufacturer

DeWalt's next generation of XRP heavy-duty cordless drills offers more torque, three speed settings, and a chuck with tighter bit grip. The DW980K-2 12-volt, 1/2-inch adjustable clutch drill/driver uses a DeWalt-built high-torque motor to deliver 350 in./lbs. of torque for drilling bigger holes and driving bigger screws. Besides boosting torque, DeWalt is the first company to add a three-speed transmission that produces more rpm for faster drilling and driving applications. Low speed (first gear) and high speed (second gear) are similar to other cordless drills currently available. However, the new MAX third speed is 29 percent faster, with a range of 0 to 1,800 rpm. The DW980K-2 features a 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck lock to keep a tighter grip on the bit. The ratcheting chuck lock consists of two elements: an automatic spindle lock that allows users to tighten down on the chuck two-times tighter, and ratcheting action to prevent the chuck sleeve from loosening during the job. Other features include all-metal gearing and a metal gear case for durability, and an anti-slip comfort grip to reduce user fatigue. The DW980K-2 includes the drill/driver, two XR batteries, one-hour charger, double-ended screwdriver bit, and carrying case.

Features

  • DeWalt-built Series 4000 high-torque motor delivers 350 in./lbs. of maximum torque
  • Exclusive 3-speed all-metal transmission features a MAX 3rd speed at 0 to 1,800 rpm, which is 29 percent faster than high speed
  • 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck lock prevents bits from slipping
  • Extended run-time batteries provide more work per charge and maximum number of recharges with no memory
  • Superior ergonomics and balance for increased comfort and control

5.0 out of 5 stars Best drill I have owned!, October 29, 2001
By Mike Neff (Toledo Ohio) - See all my reviews
I bought this drill about 2 weeks ago and I am still amazed by it. I am in a profession where I use it every day. I have been through 4 drills now, including 2 Makitas, 1 Craftsman and a DeWalt. I have to say that this one takes the cake for features. It has held up well over these past 2 weeks let see what it will do in the future. The batteries last a good 3 days after continues use. If I had to recomend a 12v drill to some one it would be this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars The clutch is DEFECTIVE ..., March 28, 2002
By hethfeth (CA United States) - See all my reviews
After one return for a new drill and then trying several Drills at the Depot, and two calls to Dewalt, I finally got the answer to why the clutch DOES NOT WORK in low gear - the drill is DEFECTIVE. The Dewalt tech put it this way: "We designed it to work in all speeds, but that's just the way it came out." In other words, the production model is defective. I have an old 2-speed 18V drill, and the clutch works as it should in the 0-450 rpm range. The XRP clutch does not work in the 0-450 range. Since low speed has the highest torque, this is where you most need a clutch!! Wait for Dewalt to fix this! They know it is defective, but are trying to tell everyone it is normal. Bad show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Purchase for the money!, May 13, 2002
By A Customer
Recently, I encountered several home task requiring the needs of a drill, for metal drilling. I ventured out to buy a Skil 18v unit, DeWalt 12v XRP, and a B&D 14.4v Firestorm for comparison. After trying all three products on the metal objects and comparing the specs...... I returned the B&D and the Skil. The DeWalt unit is well worth the few extra dollars.
