The Triumph of Ms. Spears, December 4, 2004
Say what you will about Britney- she can put out an entertaining pop CD. Her peers Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson are both better singers (especially Christina) but tend to make albums that aren't perfect. This album is perfect. Or as close as you can get to perfection in modern pop music.
This album is considered by many to be a new beginning for Britney. But that's not entirely true. Britney's fourth album "In the Zone" is really where she shifts direction. In this one, you can hear hints of the direction she will be going, but anyone who enjoyed her first two CDs will find nothing alienating on this one. Likewise, those hoping for a drastic departure will find nothing radically different on this one. But what does it matter when the music sounds this good?
Let me begin by saying there is nothing on this CD as immediately infectious and wonderful as "Oops...I Did It Again" or "...Baby, One More Time." But whereas her first two albums had some good songs, and some filler, this album is good from start to finish. "I'm A Slave 4 U" was the first single from this album and was produced by the Neptunes. At first, this song may not seem like it's Britney's style, which may be why people got the idea that Britney had made a transformation with this album. But after a few listens, it really grows on you. The second track, "Overprotected" was from her movie Crossroads. This is the Britney we remember from the first two albums, and you won't be able to get this one out of your head. "Lonely" could be a hit coming from most pop artists, but Britney had better material ahead on this album. "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet A Woman" is another song everybody knows, fully worth listening to. Britney's vocals aren't always her strong spot on song's like this, but she pulls it off. "Boys" is another Neptunes produced track and is even better than the first one. "Anticipating" is a song Britney cowrote and a fine one. "I Love Rock and Roll" is another cover of a classic rock song from Britney. While I wish she would keep away from the classics, this isn't nearly as bad as her butchering of the Rolling Stone's classic "Satisfaction" on her last CD. In fact, while certainly not as good as the original, Britney's version of "I Love Rock and Roll" is still pretty catchy and fun. "Cinderella" is another song Britney cowrote with Max Martin, the mastermind behind many of her past hits. This is a definite winner, and one of my favorites on the album. I could go on to mention the remaining tracks and point out that I like them, but there's no point in citing each one specifically when that's about all I have to say for them.
All that matters is that this is a great pop album. You can easily listen to this in a sitting, and you don't get sick of it as quickly as you do with many of the other pop CDs on the market. It ranks with Christina Aguilera's "Stripped" as the best of the modern pop genre. If you are bothered by the fact that Britney can be trashy, try putting that aside and listening to this CD for what it is. Pop is only meant to make you want to dance, or sing along and this CD accomplishes it's only goal beautifully. Don't miss it.

Her best work to date, January 10, 2004
By A Customer
When "I'm A Slave 4 U," the first single from BRITNEY, first started getting noticed, I was a bit surprised, didn't know what to think. I was so used to listening to all of the squeaky-clean dance-pop from BABY and OOPS! that "Slave" was a bit of a shock. I purchased the album soon after nevertheless, and I don't regret it. After giving "Slave" a few more spins, I came to the conclusion that it was, and remains, one of her best songs. First of all, there is something on this album that her previous two lacked -- lyrical intelligence and musical diversity. I'm one who appreciates when artists get involved with their songwriting and production, and Britney's not too shabby. She actually started singing about real life experiences instead of all the mushy, good-girl songs. She talks about sexuality ("Slave," "Boys"), not being permitted to be herself ("Overprotected," "Not A Girl," "Let Me Be," "What It's Like To Be Me"), breakup ("Lonely," "Cinderella"), the fun with being a woman ("Anticipating"), getting your groove on ("I Love Rock 'n' Roll"), and, for once, good love songs ("Bombastic Love," "That's Where You Take Me.") Highlights: "Slave," "Overprotected," "Not A Girl," "Anticipating," and "That's Where You Take Me." BABY and OOPS!, although very good albums in their own ways, definitely don't measure up to this fantastic album. This is a great way to start your Britney collection if you're a new fan. It's been my favorite CD since I bought it in 2001. And although I bought IN THE ZONE the day it came out and listen to it quite a bit, BRITNEY's still at the top of my list. Even after 2½ years it sounds refreshing and original - complete ear candy. Buy this CD!!

Britney Spears is "Bombastic", November 24, 2003
A Kid's Review
Britney is absolutly "bombastic." This is truley one of Britney's better albums, and all of the songs are wonderful to listen too. This is Britney's 1st album that doesn't depend on 2 or 3 singles, instead it is "complete." Since her previous releases, her voice has matured, but she still has that sound that made her a star. In my opinion, she has that kind of voice that's nice too listen to, because she doesn't belt out the notes, instead she sings her songs naturally and in a calming sort of way. My favourite songs on this album are "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman", "Let Me Be","Bombastic Love",and "Boys". However, their all great songs. If you love this album, than you should get Britney's latest release "In The Zone." It's even better then "Britney", and shows how much she has matured over the past year. Also, this album truley expresses Britney's talent to date, and what she is capable of doing, and in the end Britney always comes out on top, even if her records didn't sell the "expected amount."
