Amazon.com Product Description

Customization is key in Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2. In this release, players can create their own riders (or ride as BMX champ Dave Mirra, Ryan Nyquist, and others in an impressive posse of BMX pros), choose their own sponsors, and even design their own parks in which to complete a variety of challenges. As players progress through the game, they'll earn the respect of fellow riders. The ultimate, however, is to unseat Mirra himself as king of the BMX hill.

Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 also supports up to 12 players and features 10 multiplayer games, including an extreme bikathalon competition. Also, the release includes eight additional game levels, and they're four times beefier than before. Tear and trick through a total of 11 levels with this edition. The game is completed by integrated traffic, including moving cars, trains, trucks, and even other riders and pedestrians.

The open trick system in Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 holds more than 1,500 tricks and signature moves--many of them motion captured off Mirra himself. And a fitting soundtrack accompanies the game, featuring cuts from Ozzy Osbourne, Methods of Mayhem, the Cult, Godsmack, and others.

Note: This text refers to the PlayStation2 version of this game.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best BMX game currently on the market (12/3/01), December 3, 2001
By "daniel_y" (Tulsa, OK United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 (Video Game)
(...) Dave Mirra 2 boasts new characters, more bikes, vastly larger levels, and, of course, greatly improved graphics. The trick system has been expanded, with many new tricks and variations available.

Graphically, Dave Mirra 2 is not bad to look at, but not really anything special, either, especially in comparison to THPS3. The 3D models are adequate, and offer a good many lines to ride one, and the textures are uniformly good. Still, the game is not nearly as graphically beautiful as some of the other first-generation games that are available on the new systems.

Sound is good, but again, nothing special. The soundtrack is alright, and even has its high points, but it's really a matter of personal taste. The usual grind noises, thumps, whacks, and grunts of pain are satisfactory and vary enough to sound good.

The levels are large and often very creative, but not as well-designed as those in THPS3. They are fun to ride and contain the usual secrets, huge jumps, and multipurpose obstacles.

The game is much harder than its predecessor, but still easier than THPS3. It should take a good while for most gamers to beat the game with every character and unlock all the secret videos, riders, and modes. There are rumors of secret levels, too, but I have yet to unlock any of them.

Although most of the game seems pretty mediocre, it's still one of my favorite bike/skate-type games ever. Why? Well, it all comes down to the trick system.

(...) Dave Mirra 2 offers an enormously deep and engrossing trick system that will keep a lot of us gamers busy for hours on end. And once you get used to the system, you can start pulling all kinds of amazing combinations. And of course, common stock tricks like superman seatgrabs and double nac-nacs become quite easy to pull.

Similar to THPS's manuals, Mirra 2 riders can tie their tricks together with heelies and nose wheelies, and flatlanders can even pull endoes and stoppies if they know what they're doing. A wide range of grinds and plants are available, too.

In the end, this game will not impress anyone with its mediocre graphics and just decent level designs. What will keep people coming back to this game is its brilliant trick system and the enormous versatility. I still haven't gotten tired of it. If you like bike games, and especially if you bike in real life (like I do :)), you will find this to be the best and most enjoyable bike game available. It's easy to start playing, even for beginners, but offers enough depth to keep even hardcore gamers coming back for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, Must-buy for extreme sport fans, November 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 (Video Game)
Dave Mirra 2 is an excellent game. It does have its flaws though. One mission objective says "Do 1-footed flair over halfpipe" when the flair move isent even in the trick book because not all the tricks could be fit in. But, you can soon figure out how to do one. There are a few minor camera angle problems, for instance, wehn you go through a tight corridor. But, the average gamer won't really even notice or pay any attention to this. Now, onto the good stuff about this game. The levels are HUGE. They remind me of THP3 in the layout but they are 4 or 5 times the size. This is a major reason for buying this game as playing on free ride mode or even in competion, just riding around the place doing tricks everywhere is a hell of a lot of fun. There are aover 1500 tricks in this game which gives enough replay value as you will try to learn more and more tricks. Don't pass this game up, you will enjoy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but needs some polishing, April 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 (Video Game)
This game is the highly anticipated version of Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX2 for GameCube. I have played this game on both systems and find the GameCube version to be a more vivid and easier to control game. However, it is a game that needs work! Its soundtrack, although with some great hits, needs work in a variety of areas- the songs, unless you painstakingly select them, repeat over and over again meaning that if I start playing a game with one song, it will continue to play until I have selected otherwise.
Another weakness- the game has no sense of barriers (ie walls, poles, grinding rails.) Sometimes, I am able to ride through a pole, however, on other occasions, on that same pole, my rider gets knocked down. Also, and this is the worst part of the game, if you are riding and you bump into a wall, your rider immedialey gets knocked into reverse, this causes a short, but infuriating delay as your rider evetually pulls himself out of reverse.
Other times, the screen shakes uncontrolably. This makes the game extremely fustrating, as it is hard to complete the myriad of tasks- which without these problems would be a joy to complete.
With some patience, this game can be rewarding, in that it is fun when you're not dealing with the technical flaws of it. However, if I could reverse my decision in buying it, I would...had I known about the flaws, I would have waited until a newer and more thought out version came out.
