Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The second album from brothers Simon and Edsel "Dope" and their ever- changing lineup is a breath of fresh air. While the New York-based sextet fits loosely into the nu metal category, Dope take more from basic rock & roll structures and less from faux-aggro rap-rock than many of their brethren. In fact, the catchy first single, "Now or Never," boasts an almost classic-rock vibe, and the entire record is more rock and less "shock" than their decent debut, Felons and Revolutionaries. Though at times Edsel has a Marilyn Manson inflection to his voice, and on songs like "Stop" there are hints of White Zombie-influenced electronic riff-rock, the melody lines and vocals make most of Life's songs timeless and accessible, while still maintaining a dark, angry and Gen-Y- leaning appeal. Many of Life's 13 cuts, including "What About" and "Slipping Away" are basic, dramatic, and cool, Dope proving themselves no slaves to rock/metal fashion while still existing within their modern musical milieu. --Katherine Turman

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This CD!, April 16, 2002
(note: this was originally written on amazon.co.uk by ME, and this is an exact copy of the one on co.uk, excluding this small note here)

Why haven't you already bought this CD already? What has attracted you to this CD in the first place? Well Dope are pretty big over in the US, and they damn well deserve to be big over here!

You might have heard their track Debonair on the Fast & The Furious soundtrack or the Scream 3 soundtrack, or alternatively you might have heard their cover of Dead Or Alive's 80's classic You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)! Well neither of these tracks or on this album, but this album doesn't need these great tracks, as the songs on it already are class! Let's run them through shall we?

Take Your Best Shot: Opens with a Barney (yes Barney), doing his little sing song, then gun shots, and a little kiddie telling us exactly what they think of Barney...... Pure class already! Then all of a sudden the music explodes and we have one of the best openers on a CD ever! The song is about taking your best shot in life, and just doing all you can!

Now Or Never: First single of the album, and it has some awesome riffs to it that will leave you hooked, not to forget an un-forgettable chorus!

Nothing (Why): One of my many fav tracks on this album, but this song really stands out! None of the foul-mouthed language in it, that you'd expect, but rather lyrics coming straight from Edel Dope's heart, about him and his girl having nothing together, so why bother?

Stop: Fast paced track, that would work perfectly on a dance floor, but still keeps Dope's heavyness, and an awesome track!

Thanks For Nothing: What can I say about this track? Well apart from IT ROCKS! As you can see from the title the chorus is exactly that, and the song is based on that ideaology! I love the lyrics, and personally it suits my view of the world!

Die MF Die: The song that made me first check out Dope. The M stands for Mother and the F stands for...... well you know what it stands for! Absolute top, and will annoy neighbours/parents/passers bys with the high impact, crushing riffs and the very foul-mouthes chorus!

Move It: Check out Stop for this one! But this track isn't remotely like Stop, but has those kind of quality's about it!

Jenny's Cryin': Ok-ish track. Not the best on the album, but better than everything else on the market today!

With Or Without You: OH MY GOD!!! I dont know why, but I feel like Edsel must have been listening to U2 when he wrote this! Emotional lyrics, and a tune that will stay with you until you die....... BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!!!

Slipping Away: Second single off the album, and yet another blinder! Awesome tune, and once again emotional lyrics, create a tune that when most people hear it, will want to know who sung it! Class!

March Of Hope: A track to sing along to, and as the title suggests, to march to as well! Should be our national anthem lol!

Your So Full Of Sh't: Bonus track, and once again another top tune!

Dope have influences ranging from Heavy Metal music from the 80s to a bit of White Zombie mixed with bands such as Limp Bizkit & KoRn, but totally stand out as musicians in their own right! They've created a sound of thier own, and they are well worth checking out!

I also recommend their debut album Felons & Revolutionaires which contains other great songs such as Wake Up, Debonair & the master track Kimberly's Ghost!

BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dope, October 7, 2003
I like that the band is very patriotic and they are a group that still writes songs about very personal subjects that almost anyone can relate to. I enjoyed the style that they expressed their opinions as opposed to their other album. I would recomend this CD to anyone else. Grace CS112
