Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Brother contributes another smart machine (at a smart price) to the multifunction market with this 5-in-1 combination of color fax, color printer, color copier, color scanner, and computer-based fax.

As a printer, the MFC-3100C can produce 10 pages per minute of black and white and eight pages per minute of color, at up to 2,400 x 1,200 resolution (naturally, the higher resolutions are a little slower printing). The 100-sheet paper cassette keeps you always in stock.

As a full-color fax machine, the MFC-3100C features 2 MB of memory, storing up to 100 pages, and 14.4 bps speed, delivering a page roughly every six seconds. With 40 station auto-dialing, the machine also can broadcast faxes to 90 locations. In addition, the MFC-3100C is equipped with a Brother PC Fax Driver, enabling you to send black-and-white faxes from your PC.

The MFC-3100C's scanner function can scan at up to 2,400 dpi, and one-touch keys allow for scanning directly to e-mail or OCR. When it comes to making copies, the MFC5100c can print up to 99 copies at a time at 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution. Copies can be reduced and enlarged from 25 percent to 400 percent.

With parallel and USB interfaces, the MFC-3100C is cross-platform compatible, working with Works with Windows and iMac/iBook/G3/G4, with parallel and USB interfacing (cables not included). The unit is backed by a one-year limited warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great photo quality, June 24, 2002
By A Customer
I have recently purchased this machine for fax and mostly black and white print jobs for my home office. Since then I have purchased a digital camera, and have found this machine produces great framable pictures!!! I would highly recomend this machine for anyone who shops around and wants the most features and quality for the price. I have used up a few ink cartridges printing larger 8x10 photos, but the individual ink cartridges make it easy and cost effective to use. The only thing I am missing is a flatbed, but so far I haven't needed it and have been able to scan pictures through the document feeder. Also a great color copier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Photo-Quality Multi Function Center, September 13, 2002
By Michael (Fort Lauderdale, FL USA) - See all my reviews
I purchased the Brother MFC 3100C about two months ago and have been very pleased with it.

Text Quality:
The text looks sharp as in laser printers when you use cheap inkjet paper. I highly recommend buying inkjet paper( I bought a ream [$$$] and got another one for free. The sheets are heavier, which eliminates show-through and give documents a better feel and more durability). But the text looks good in regular multi-purpose paper too.

Photo Quality:
The photo output is excellent, using photo paper, but even in regular paper it looks nice. I printed some pictures and it looks very nice for a multi-functioning device.

Fax:
It is very easy to send faxes through this machine. You can send several pages at once. Just place them on the feeder, dial the number (there's a speed dial feature for #s you frequently send faxes to) and press the Black or Color Fax Start button. I never sent color faxes, so I don't know if it works.

Scanner:

The scanner is very powerful since it can scan images up to 2400 dpi of resolution. I scanned several photos and some text too and I have been satisfied with the results. (Tip: to scan photos, use "Paper Port" that comes with it. You have more control over the scanned pictures.)

Conclusion:

You can't go wrong with the MFC-3100C. Unlike Lexmark and HP multifunction centers, it features individual cartridges, so you won't have to waste ink if only one color runs out. In addition to that, I have printed a LOT of documents, including photos, and there's still more than half of ink to use. This "printer" is a ink saver!! Unless you really need a flatbed, I recommend it to anyone looking for a multi-functioning device. You won't regret it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Multi-purpose device, October 20, 2002
By M. Anderson (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had the device for a few weeks now and have tried everything from faxing, printing and scanning. Scanned both color photo's to documents -- all without a hitch.

Having had a HP Laserjet 3150 prior, this is definitely a quality machine for the price bracket it's in.

Ink is also in separate containers, thus reducing you long-term costs vs. some other mfgs that put all the colors into a single container which has to be replaced as soon as any color runs out.

Quality of the print is good --- its not laser, but the quality is defintely above average.
