A good ALTERNATIVE, January 7, 2002
I recently bought this controller while trying to find an extra controller for the Super Smash Bros Melee matches. At first I hesitated because of the fact that it was a 3rd party controller but I was not disappointed as much as I thought I'd be. Though probably not as good quality as the official one, it's a great alternative with its cheap price tag. Here are the good things about this controller. It has larger handles with rubber grips for larger hands. The D-pad has been enlarged making it useful for games such as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, so you don't have to use that very tiny D-pad on the official one. The Z-button to me seems easier to "press" making it easier to perform actions for the Z-button. Everything else is pretty much identical to the official controller, such as the C-stick and the L and R shoulder buttons. A new button symmetrical to the Z-button is added, which is the R-button. The macro function is useful for programming the buttons around, useful for fighting games. The cable is eight feet, being about 1.5 feet longer than the official controller. And as always, it has the same vibration as the official controller. Now the bad news. The A-button seems to press in too much, making tapping the A-button continuously rather awkward. The worst problem of all is probably the analog joy-stick. As what I expected, it really wasn't sensitive as the official one. For example, while playing Super Monkey Ball, you have to move the joystick a little more than the official controller to just turn that monkey right. Though you probably won't notice it in games that don't need this much precision, games like Super Monkey Ball and perhaps other games that may come out that may need this exact precision will suffer from this joy-stick. Ohh the pain. Of course, if you could, just use an official controller that comes with the Gamecube box to play Super Monkey Ball. Overall, like I said in the beginning, it's a great alternative. I'm guessing you may be reading this just to ask yourself "I need one more controller for those multi-player matches, but I don't want to get that costy first-party controller." Well if you are asking that, I highly suggest you get this one. Though your friend using that controller may whine a lot, get some trusty ear-plugs. Just don't expect any miracles from this controller to make it better than the first-party controller. Remember, this controller is a good ALTERNATIVE. Don't go running to the (put store here) and buying four of these assuming that they'll act as a good substitute for the first-party controllers.
