3.0 out of 5 stars The originals, not the film versions, March 2, 2002
By Lunatic E'sex (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This disc contains (mostly) the original songs by the original artists that were reworked in Baz Luhrmann's film Moulin Rouge. None of this is the actual film music. A more appropriate subtitle would be "Music That Inspired the Film" (or Filmmakers), rather than the other way around.

A complete track listing, including the artists, is as follows:

1. Lady Marmalade - LaBelle
2. Nature Boy - Nat King Cole
3. Rhythm of the Night - Debarge
4. Material Girl - Disco Diva
5. Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend - Marilyn Monroe
6. I Will Always Love You - Dolly Parton
7. Your Song - Billy Paul
8. Don't Leave Me This Way - Harold Melvin And The Bluenotes
9. Diamond Dogs - David Bowie
10. One Day I'll Fly Away - Randy Crawford
11. Can-Can From Orpheus in the Underworld - Philarmonic Orchestra Conducted by Herbert Von Karajan
12. The Song From Moulin Rouge - Les Compagnons De La Chanson
13. Children of the Revolution - T-Rex
14. Going Out of My Head - Fatboy Slim

15. On a Night Like This - Kylie Minogue
16. Roxanne - George Michael
17. Heroes - David Bowie
18. The Show Must Go On - Queen
19. La Complainte De La Bute - Jack Lantier
20. Hymne A L'Amour - Edith Piaf

Note that it's missing the original versions of some songs ("Material Girl" by Madonna, "Your Song" by Elton John, "Roxanne" by The Police). Instead it substitutes some unknown artists (who's "Disco Diva?" Clearly some unnamed session singer) and some known/semi-known ones (George Michael? Billy Paul? Ugh.). If you can excuse those, it's not all that bad, especially for the exposure to the original music that fans of the film might never have gotten.

As a bonus it includes orignal songs by artists who actually did play in the film, covering some of the OTHER songs (Fatboy Slim's "Going Out of My Head" and Kylie Minogue's "On a Night Like This").

They did leave out all but three of the songs from "Elephant Love Medley" (songs by the Beatles, Kiss, Phil Collins, U2, etc.), but you could practically fill an entire disc with all of them. Also missing is the original "Sound of Music" and Madonna's "Like a Virgin."

I'll give this points for effort, but minus points for using poor cover versions of some of the songs ("Material Girl," "Your Song," and "Roxanne"--program your CD player to skip over them).

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice to hear the original songs, March 22, 2005
As someone else said...since these are the ORIGINAL versions of the songs, it should be "Music that inspired the film" rather than the other way around. Just had to make that correction. Nat King Cole was not inspired by seeing Moulin Rouge to record "Nature Boy." His recording existed WAY before the movie, maybe even before some of the people in the movie were born (though I don't know for sure).
All in all, a very good CD, though. I suggest listening to both the originals and the new versions with an open mind.
