Editorial Reviews

From URB Magazine

Rap trio Mood once described their hometown of Cincinnati as a place without hip-hop. Although it was likely hyperbole and folks like DJ Hi-Tek are remedying the situation, Mood MC Main Flow has relocated to the warmer surroundings of San Diego. While some might expect a sonic shift on his solo debut, his tongue is prickly as ever and the Big Brother-esque worldview Mood espoused remains intact.

Castle Diplomat often sounds like a well-crafted Wu-Tang offshoot, but instead of rhyming about trees and kung fu, Main Flow references Byzantine architects and ancient Troy within his meaty verses. On the sobering neck snapper "Crime Outfit," Main Flow rips over a Reason-produced track full of bass string loops which could easily masquerade as a stellar Wu Tang joint. Keeping up with the fiery beat, Flow's hustled verses don't fall off cadence for a moment.

Main Flow also shines on the futuristic "Counsel of Elders." Robotic vocal effects rule an unorthodox chorus, while Flow likens his life philosophies to chess. Fellow San Diegan Greyboy crafted the memorable cut, which displays an energy and sonic punch that eclipses anything found in Mood's notable back catalogue. Many selections here, like "Espionage," "At War With Babylon" and "Morse Code," reflect Flow's subversive ideology. At times it's thematic overkill, but each selection is filled with lyrical complexities that can't be dismissed. Easily cementing his chief slot at Wanna Battle's metaphorical castle, Main Flow's floss-free first effort is a surprising gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good ish, April 5, 2005
Yeah, I'm glad someone else said that it sounded a little wu tangish. The beats are those rugged beats that sounds like something RZA or the 4th Disciple would produce, but yet it has none of them. Two that don't sound Wu esque is the track 7, which has Hi Tek on the productions, which is one of my favorites, and At War with Babylon, the bonus track, which, too me it sounded like it was produced by any cats from Uncle Howie. Those were great tracks, and every song, he comes correct lyrically, which makes the cd is tight. The problem that I have with this cd, is that there are several songs that are only one verse, so there like 1 minute long. I would get into the song and man, all of a sudden it's over. I've heard some interludes or skits that are longer than that. But hey, this is a great debut solo album from Main Flow, which represents my home town of Cincinnati, since the Reds suck and the Bearcats are starting to do the same. ( I know it says from Pleasanton, but I was born there and lived there from kindergarten to third grade.)

5.0 out of 5 stars main flow, March 11, 2002
if you like dope beats, good straight forward lyrics, tight rhyme styles, good voice and a dope delivery, then this is for you. I really enjoyed the mood album, but I like this so much more. The beats on here knock hard as hell, and main flow rides the rhythm beaufifully. I know you gotta dig that whole egyptian, pharoah, pryimid, sphinx, mysterious mystik theme, type of thing. Well if you do, thats what this album is about. listen to this and mentally travel over head fields of various landscapes. this album kind of reminds me of a magical carpet ride. buy this, or forever be tormented with wackness. this is some of the tightest ish I've heard for a while.
