3.0 out of 5 stars Can't Beat The Original, October 1, 2004
I love the original Slap Shot to death. Behind all the violence and swearing and sex jokes the movie is truly a classic. (For more details about the original read my review.)
But this review is more about this two movie pack. Therefore I need to focus on the sequal. It has Stephen Baldwin and Gary Busey as the stars. That should tell you something immediately. The plot follows the Charelstown Chiefs (Who still have the notorious Hanson Brothers) as they are sold to Gary Busey's media conglomerate. The plan is turn the Chiefs into the losers of traveling hockey show, like the Harlem Globetrotters. Eventually they get fed up with having to play the patsies and mutiny in a glorious hockey game where they change jerseys. Its like Mighty Ducks 2, but with a whole lot more swearing.
Characters are still pretty generic compared to the cast of the 1977 classic. The Hansons are there, and still very funny. There's a very neurotic goalie, a womanizing player, and the young kid looking to make it to the NHL. In addition, there's the new woman coach, which is a bit of a reference to the fact that the original was written by a woman. There are also several referances to classic lines from the original, like the Pinwheel and several of the Hanson's lines are repeats. (But still funny)
Main difference between the movies: Slap Shot was more about the psychos who played the sport back in the day. Not so much about what went on in a game, but what is making these guys act like this off the ice. That's the reason for introducing the opposing players from the original. Ogie Oglethorpe, "Dr. Hook" McCracken, "Poodle" Lucie, and all their backstories were what the movie was about. The players not the play. Slap Shot 2 takes a different approach. There's lots of real looking hockey in the movie. That's where the main action happens. Their opponents are "snot-nosed punks" who don't believe in the old style hockey that the Chiefs believe in. That's the real reason why this movie can't hold a candle to the original. The heart is not there.
So this DVD det gets three stars. The only reason I won't score lower is because it comes with the first movie. It just gets dragged down by Stephen Baldwin and Slap Shot 2. Save some money and buy the original on its own.

3.0 out of 5 stars My coupon is missing, October 7, 2006
By Hematite (Michigan) - See all my reviews
There must a mistake. After seeing #2 (ironically a perfect description), I think the original intention must have been to charge $4 less for the twin pack to offset the extra shipping charges and storage space that #2 incurs. Sadly it's a personal failing of mine to not throw away CD's or DVD's upon which I will never again shine a laser. And I am therefore doomed to have this ...#2 sitting in the back of the drawer of my entertainment center till the day that I die....or at least until I really need the space.

It's not even like it's a separate movie. It's almost as if a basic premise for a movie and some gags we given to two writers, one talented and one not, and #2 is the result of the person who is now running a meth lab. Actually, I know how #1 was written and that's a great part of the whole story. #2 really just seems like it was written by committee.

Still not as horrifying as Caddyshack 2, but I'll never watch it again.

#2 on it's own gets 1 star, but you can only get so harsh when you get the original included with it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointment, May 31, 2006
I bought these movies because I once saw a trailer featuring the hansons and it seemed like a fun movie to watch. The original movie is really boring, there are only a couple of scenes worth watching. Slap Shot 2 is probably the worst movie I've ever seen... I'll never see a movie with Stephen Baldwin again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks Coach!
Slapshot is a classic! I didn't think they could even come close with Slapshot 2, but it's not bad at all. We were surprised how good the sequel was.
