Assuming the leadership during the Iranian revolution, Ruhollah Khomeini established a clerical system of government in 1979. In the following years, he ordered the arrest and execution of close to 120,000 people, most of whom were sympathizers of People's Mojahedin Organization. About 30,000, including teenagers and elderly, were executed in the second half of 1988 alone. In his letters to Ruhollah Khomeini in July and August of 1988, Hussein Ali Montazeri, the second most important political figure at the time, protested the speed and procedure of the mass executions across Iran.* In 'GIFTS', I have tried to portray the mood imposed on Iranians by the rulling clergymen.
