Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Fieldy is the first member of Los Angeles nu metal forerunners Korn to release a solo project. Rock N Roll Gangster, however, isn't likely to thrill Korn fans who dig that band's primal lyrical angst and down-tuned musical attack, nor will it likely earn the bassist a new legion of admirers. Over the course of 17 hip-hop tracks, Fieldy delivers short, basic cuts of seemingly autobiographical boasting, including the self-referential "Baby Hugh Hef" and a pointless 21-second Korn-penned instrumental. The bassist's rapped vocals are in sharp contrast to Korn compatriot Jonathan Davis, who supplies an edgy vocal passion to "Just for Now." The best tune, "Child Vigilante," borrows from Whodini's "Freaks" for a fuller sound than most of the album's offerings, while Tre from Pharcyde pumps up "Sugar-Coated," making the Fieldy-only cuts paler in comparison. Rock N Roll Gangster makes it apparent why Fieldy isn't the frontman for Korn. --Katherine Turman

4.0 out of 5 stars Mediocore Hip-Hop, September 26, 2002
By DragonAsh14 (Pheonix, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
First off let me tell you all right now that this isnt a 4 star cd, however its not a 3 star either. If I could i would give this a 3 1/2.On top of everything else i dont like rap or hip hop that much but im not a big metal korn fan either so this review isnt bias at all.Now that thats cleared up.

Fieldy Is skilled on melody, beat, and rythm however like almost everyone else said hes lyrics suck. All he talks about is smoking weed.It really does get kind old after awhile. However this cd has a couple of great songs such as "Just For Now","Comin From A Friend", and "Are You Talking To Me".If your a punker-rocker that can appreiciate some good hip hop that doesnt talk about doing b*tches all the time:-)this is the cd for you.IF ur into rap u could probably find something better than this out somewhere but for all the rockers/punkers that dont want to take the time looking through all those trash piles off crappy rap music than u should just stick with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fieldy drops a bomb with some of the dopest sounds., June 22, 2002
By DC Smith (Columbia, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This is one of the most underated albums of the year. Of course w/Fieldy, the bass line has to be tight. The music hooks you the first time you hear it. The lyrics are occassionally sophmoric, but the music more than makes up for it.

I have had this CD in the car for more than 4 months and listen to it almost daily. This is a damn good first effort.

1.0 out of 5 stars Keep dreaming..., April 10, 2002
By Gabriel Saraco (Wantagh, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is written to the curious, musically open-minded KoRn fan. People like myself who love KoRn ..., but can appreciate good hip-hop as well. Let's get a good group vibe going here, so we can lament this tragedy of a recording together.

WOW, this album is bad. I WANTED to like "Fieldy's Dreams." I desperately did. But there's very little that's done right here. There's no catchy rythms, very few catchy beats (most of which sound like they were produced from a really [bad] synthesizer), and barely any clever RHYMES.

And that's one of this project's greatest flaws. The recording is a lyrical embarrassment. Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst will sound like freakin' Longfellow after you've heard a few of Fieldy's tracks. And that's using "Chocolate Starfish"-era Durst as the frame of reference. Seriously, Durst's "Hot Dog" is a Homerian epic after hearing an atrocity like Fieldy's "Bleu." Only the filthy "Comin' From a Friend," an over-the-top admonition against promiscuous wives, manages to ascend to the status of "guilty-pleasure."

There is however, one bright spot on the album--and not surprisingly, it's supplied by KoRn's frontman, Jonathan Davis. The track "Just For Now" starts out promisingly, with a creative, middle-eastern sounding beat that immediately stands out from the rest of the material on the album. Once Davis joins in for the chorus, the song soars. Lyrically, this track is contemplative and profound... a refreshing break from the predictable "bling-bling" drivel permeating the remainder of the CD.

I only paid [$] for this CD, so I'm content to consider it a "Just For Now" single and be happy with my purchase. I could ONLY recommend this album to die hard KoRn fans who stumble upon a bargain price--because the one Davis track on this CD is the only thing worth holding onto. And don't be fooled--while there is one track written by KoRn's Brian "Head" Welch, and another written by all members of KoRn, these are just weird interludes that don't even total 40 seconds of material. If you dare purchase this, know what you're getting--ONE great song ("Just For Now") and a LOT of garbage.
