Fever was released on a wave of publicity as the lead single, "Can't Get You out of My Head," battled on the U.K. charts with the debut effort of Spice diva Victoria Beckham--and it won spectacularly. Kylie Minogue's sound has progressed again since the disco-inspired Light Years, plundering the retro style of post-disco electro from the late 1970s and showing what might have happened if Kraftwerk had produced Donna Summer or Chic. Unlike most pop albums, or indeed pop artists, Fever is geared toward high-energy dance rather than pedestrian "I love lovin' you" ballads. Aside from the aforementioned hit single, another standout is "Give It to Me," a great piece of dance pop that has everything from Britney-style wailings to Basement Jaxx funk wrapped up with a catchy and typically suggestive chorus. The closest Minogue gets to a gentler moment is at the very end with "Burning Up," a breezy guitar progression with a laid-back melody, but it doesn't last long as the need to start dancing again takes hold and Fever breaks into some electro funk, finishing on a definite high. --David Trueman

From URB Magazine

Sure, maybe she is Australia's provincial answer to Madonna, perpetually in and around the news for the past decade and always making her presence felt musically, most often in the form of dance tracks (you probably missed the '90s remix Felix Da Housecat did for her). And yes, she still has yet to live down her lone American hit, an innocuous late-'80s cover of "The Loco-Motion."

So while Fever plays like her version of Olivia Newton-John getting Physical with America back in the day, it never fully delivers on its similar promise of guilty pleasures, bawdy beats (and most importantly) well-crafted songs.

Blasting off with the disco-fied "More More More" and the Madonna-molests-Daft-Punk pop of "Love at First Sight," she drops "Can't Get You Out of My Head," a decidedly delicious ditty that actually lives up to the album's glam-slam pretensions. If only for a moment, it would seem that Minogue's onto something.

Alas, how quickly the fizz fades. The title track plays like a reject from P. Diddy's babe band Dream's album, and let's not even get into the embarrassingly fake funk of "Give It to Me." We're talking classic Paula Abdul here.

She thankfully turns down the rah-rah machine for the smooth gloss of "Fragile," one of the album's most bearable moments.

But it's short-lived, as Minogue resorts to sickly sweet fluff like "Come into My World," although the cheesy disco bop of "Dancefloor" is something of a . . . guilty pleasure. Still, Fever makes Britney Spears seem like even more of a pop genius. Scary.

4.0 out of 5 stars I've got the Fever, have you?, July 5, 2002
By Stephanie Schlegel (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Kylie Minogue has created an amazing dance album. In my book that earns her 4 stars. Though the songs sometimes lack quality lyrics, the beats and music create an atmosphere the makes this album truely one of a kind. I'm not a huge fan of dance pop so i subtracted one star for personal taste. Some of the standout tracks are "Fever", "Love at First Sight" and "Dancefloor". For those of you who haven't heard these songs I now offer you a breakdown of each song:

1) More, More, More- I was watching some show on VH1 about disco music and heard this song. It's a remake of a huge hit from the 1970's. Kylie's version sounds better than the original. It has a super disco beat and is a very enjoyable song.

2) Love At First Sight- Kylie's current single. I originally bought this CD and only listened to her first single but this song got me to explore the whole album. This is a super song. It makes a person feel happy and hope that you will find love at first sight.

3) Can't Get You Out of My Head- no matter how hard I try I can't get this song out of my head. At first I thought it was stupid and annoying but it just grew on me. I had to have this album. The song is an infectious mix of synthesized pop and kylie's unique vocals.

4) Fever- sounds like a slow song but gradually becomes something that is totally danceable. One of the stronger lyrical songs on this album. I recommend this to anyone that is crushing on someone. It makes you realize that everyone experiences the same feelings.

5) Give It To Me- This song is a bit to much Britney for me, but just like Britney you begin to really like this song. It's like a faster tempo "I'm A Slave 4 U". It's generally an enjoyable song.

6) Fragile- It is like a ballad that is placed on top of some fast beats. It is a pretty song but would have been better if it was just a ballad. This is the weakest of the songs but it is still better than most dance pop i've heard lately.

7) Come Into My World- Another addictive song. The beginning sounds like Madonna's "Ray of Light" but the song changes after that. The chorus sounds a little haunting. I think it's a great mix of everything that they decided to put into this song. My only recommendation is that you listen to this song.

8) In Your Eyes- This song has a beat that will stick with you forever. I bet this will be a huge hit on dancefloors. It follows in the tradition of the rest of this album, a danceable song that sounds different from the rest of the songs out right now.

9) Dancefloor- I have this song on repeat. It's a short song that leaves you wanting more everytime it ends. This is the standout song of the album. I hope that this is released as a single because it is excellent.

10) Love Affair- another great dance song. Has a disco feel to it as well. It has very pretty lyrics and Kylie's voice turns this into what could be a huge hit. The chorus is a description of a love affair and it well written. Very danceable.

11) Your Love- Very similar to the previous song but with a slightly different feel. Is prettier sounding than lots of dance songs which rely on beats while this song relies more on vocals and there is even some use of guitars in this song.

12) Burning Up- starts a slow song for about thirty seconds and then she says "I'm burning up" a zillion times and then it goes slow again and fast again. This is the trend for the song. It sounds terrible when I describe it but it actually sounds really good.

Basically this is a dance pop CD. If you like dance pop you'll love this CD, if not you might enjoy it anyways. A lot of people I know like this CD that you would think would hate it but it's really popular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give me More More More!, May 4, 2002
By Clarissa "MoonGoddess" (Ontario, California) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is the only CD that I own by Kylie Minogue so I can't really compare it to her others but from what I can hear this FEVER is burning hot. From the opening groove of "More More More" to the last more techno sounding "Butterfly" this CD is guaranteed to blow your mind.

About 15 years ago Kylie broke out in the US with her hit cover of "Locomotion", thereafter exploding with continuous chart toppers in the UK. Until recently nobody could remember who Kylie was until the huge radio single "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" came out and did just that. I remember when that song first came out and everyone was humming to it. Its died down now but I hope that she can continue to dominate the pop charts because she really does deserve that type of fame. She's so much more talented than Britney Spears who sounds like a chipmunk when she sings and I think that its time that we recognize that and hand her her rightful crown. With sweeping ballads like "Fragile" and potential chart toppers like "Come Into My World" (which will probably be her next single) and "Love Affair" (which pumps with rhythmic techno) this is destined to become one of the best dance albums ever made. In my own opinion every song here is a potential hit but others that standout from the rest include the r&b spiced "Boy" (which is one of two hidden tracks only found on the US release) and the funky "Burning Up" with its infectuous disco beats. So if you like electronic groups like Daft Punk and Basement Jaxx with fun dance-pop (not to mention catchy choruses) than Kylie Minogue's FEVER is the perfect album to light your fire with.

This is pure ear candy and it's highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kylie's World, December 29, 2002
By thomas angelo zunich (long beach, ca USA) - See all my reviews
Who would have thought Kylie Minogue would re-emmerge after a 13 year hiatus in the United States? I was shocked when I found out it was Kylie Minogue singing "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", the same girl who sang "The Locomotion"? It's like whoa, what's up?.......Well, I finally heard the whole album "Fever", and it's fantastic. From a target audience standpoint and from what I've heard, it was marketed towards gay men 18-40, but "Fever" miraculously crossed over to find a wider audience, and it's great that everyone can enjoy it. One of the most brilliant concepts of the album is they didn't put any slow ballads on it, which really keeps the energy flowing in a constant, consistant beat. Here are my individual ratings for each song:

MORE MORE MORE: 5/5
fun, energetic, and disco tinged groove.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT: 4/5
danceable, delectable, delicious

CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD: 4/5
this really should be 3 stars, but when it first came out in the clubs it was 5 stars, but because we all have heard it a million times, it's 4 stars, make sense?

FEVER: 4/5
poppy feel, very catchy lyrics, starts off bad but ends up hooking you.

GIVE IT TO ME: 2/5
worst song on the album, very obnoxious beat, annoying song, i skip it.

FRAGILE: 5/5
this song grows on you, it's very mystical and haunting, an emotional song that could make you cry.

COME INTO MY WORLD: 5/5
this song is infectuous, the remixes are even better than the original album version.

IN YOUR EYES: 3/5
just your everyday average song....

DANCEFLOOR: 4/5
energetic groove that makes you want to hit the dancefloor.

LOVE AFFAIR: 4/5
another good groove by Miss Kylie

YOUR LOVE: 4/5
starts off bad, but ends up being a great song that makes you sing along.

BURNING UP: 4/5
strange song with 2 different tempos, chorus sounds like a disco sample but it's Kylie, funky!
