Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This addition to the Another Late Night series follows hot on the heels of Zero 7's popular 2001 debut, Simple Things, which fit in nicely with the current staying-in-is-the-new-going-out trend in dance music. What better way to reward fans of all things downtempo and chilled out than to lend their record boxes to one of the genre's most potent and respected series? As a look into the influences behind Simple Things, it's illuminating; every song sounds like it could have been playing on a corner jukebox while they were making the album. From the DJ Shadow-esque "Channel Suite 1" by the Cinematic Orchestra to the Stylistics' trippy nursery version of "People Make the World Go Round," this is music to simultaneously open your heart and nod your head to. --Ruby Tuesday

From URB Magazine
In 1991, Massive Attack's released their debut Blue Lines in America. While in their homeland they were hailed as damn near the UK's urban heir to Pink Floyd, in the States it was more of a cult phenomenon that eventually laid the groundwork for the brief reign of "trip-hop" in the mid-'90s.

Ten years later, London's Zero 7 released their debut Simple Things and look poised to spark a whole new sonic revolution. Deceptively elementary on the surface, the album's vast array of influences (which run from underground hip-hop to old-school sound systems) reveal themselves gloriously over time.

On this deliciously eclectic compilation, the Zero 7 guys (Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns) plumb those influences to unearth a treasure trove of back-packer hip-hop (Souls of Mischief, Slum Village) and soul (Syvia Striplin's Biggie-sampled "You Can't Turn Me Away") classics. Augmented by the occasional blast of indie pop (Jim O'Rourke's sublime "Ghost Ship in a Storm") and straight jazz (Leroy Huston's "Cool Out"), this is one of those rare mixes that flirts with perfection. Ending with their own Air-ish take on Johnny Osbourne's "Truth and Rights" and the Stylistics' eternal "People Make the World Go Round," Zero 7's point has been made in spades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jeez, how dim are you lot?, September 22, 2004
By Sean (Dublin) - See all my reviews
Yes, it's a compilation album of tracks that inspired the compiler, just like all the other 'Another Late Night' CDs. Seemingly a lot of folks here instantly dismissed it on that basis. Besides which, the tracks included are very Zero-7ish in vibe:
Cinematic Orchestra's string-drenched Channel 1 Suite, a dub workout of Roots Manuva's Witness, Madlib's helium-voiced alias Quasimoto and winds down with Herbert's mighty remix of Serge Gainsbourg.
Check it out, unless you strictly sit on the Groove Armada/Fatboy Slim fence there'll be plenty of new albums worth investigating on the strength of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little jumbled with some highlights perhaps worth it., September 4, 2002
By Alex J. Avriette "Alex Avriette" (Arlington, Virginia USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After hearing Rae and Christian's Another Late Night, I really had to hear more of the series (DJ Dan, Zero 7, Groove Armada), so I picked this CD up. Amazon had also recommended Zero 7 to me independantly.

It started out innocently enough, with some loungey jazzy beats and ambient mood to it. The record rapidly turned, however, within three tracks, to a meta-rap deluge over mild and meek beats.

After another couple tracks, the rap thinned out some, and it was replaced with some more upbeat, electronic jazz tones. I think that about half way through is really the highlight of the album. Bright and melodic, but still downtempo enough to be a relaxing listen.

Shortly thereafter, however, the record makes a foray back into the hard rap-over-quiet-music genre.

Thankfully, the album finishes on a brighter note, and for about four tracks, the album is worth listening to.

I don't regret buying the album; I simply wish it had more substance to it. Buy used.

4.0 out of 5 stars People Are Idiots, July 11, 2003
By A Customer
Simple Things is on of the coolest albums to come out in a while and Zero 7 certainly take you on a wonderful ride. Another Late Night is a CD of a much different type and purpose. The CD is great in it's own right because it stands firmly as a compilation and gives an insight into what inspired Zero 7.

Any idiot who thought this was a new disc by Zero 7 and bashes it accordingly because it is not, well...why read a review by someone who can't even read a CD's description before purchasing it.

This is Mellow, Classic stuff...for the refined ear.
