3.0 out of 5 stars An tribute that gets "undone", February 12, 2002
By Chris Wren "Chris Wren" (Chicago, Illinois) - See all my reviews
being a die-hard fan of the =w=, I was totally let down with this compilation. Maybe my expectations were too high or I was imagining I'd get more out of it, but something was definitely missing.

The major problem with it was the fact that at least 3/4 of the songs sound almost EXACTLY like the original weezer track. Good examples: Piebald's "No One Else." (one of my favorite songs which gets semi-butchered), Midtown's "Suzanne." The songs are an exact replica of the original album version and, quite frankly, Rivers' yelps and squeals are a heckuva lot better than these emo-fied screams.

However, there are some definite high spots on the album. Christopher John aka Elliot's rendition of "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here" fully capitulates what, in my case, i felt when I first heard the song. Slowed down, the song is turned almost into an enchanting ballad. In a similar vein, The Stereo's cover of "El Scorcho" has enough variation and consistency to make it a stand out track. Chris Carrabba's rendition of "Jamie" lives up to his relatively lofty standards as a recording artist, adding the emotional rawness of the acoustic guitar.

In short, a few tracks on this album make it worth buying. However, there is enough disappointments to also make the casual buyer stray away from it. If you're a hardcore =w= fan, go for it, take the plunge and I'm sure you'd enjoy at least most of the songs. However, if you want to hear great covers, be very wary of this.

I'll be getting it because I'm a weezer nut. But that's just me.

4.0 out of 5 stars very strong tribute album, May 20, 2002
By Jonathan H. Spence (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
The topic of a bunch of bands covering weezer could be very volatile. This album is an excellent example of this. There are some excellent tracks on this album which really show that weezer songs lend themselves amazingly to all sorts of rock genres. Mycomplex's cover of tired of sex, and the Impossible's The good life are very creative. I also reccomend Mock Orange's Only in dreams, Midtown's susanne, and Affinity's my name is Jonas.
However, there are also tracks on this album that make you want to grab the nearest sharpened pencil and commit hari-kari with it just to hear what it's like if you take a perfectly good weezer track, strip it of any soul it had, kick all the talent out of it, mix it in a garbage can with trite meaninglessness and reproduce it void of everything good. Further Seems Forever, Christopher John, The Stereo.... shame on all of you. I hope you cry yourselves to sleep at night knowing that instead of taking a song and doing something creative or valuable with it you have just played it soullessly and whined out the lyrics. If i wanted to hear no musical talent and crying i would turn on R&B. Leave emo out of this you talentless hacks.
I recommend buying this album if you are into the math rock scene, or have a little punk blood running in your veins. Just recognize there will be a few tracks you will skip. If you want to listen to emo, there is enough saves the day or get up kids albums for you to buy to keep you happy for years bopping up and down with your pigtails and retro clothes you payed to much for. Leave my weezer alone.

2.0 out of 5 stars I've had better...., April 23, 2003
By mb (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews
I was horribly disappointed at this weezer tribute album. I was expecting it to be so much better. Weezer is an awesome band, and the bands who play on this cd are pretty good themselves. The only songs that I could bare to listen to were the ones redone by midtown, the ataris, dashboard, and the stereo. The other's were hard to listen to- they so severely butchered weezer's songs. The other reviews led me to think that this could be a cd I actually wanted to purchase. hmmmm... guess I was wrong.

I like a tribute album to transform the songs, I like when the band redo a song with their sound, imagining it as if it was one of their song. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars These people are not to forgiving
This album is a very nice remake of weezer songs into their own verison of the song, while keeping some of the original parts of it. I think it is worth every penny.
