Biography

Passionate, heart-wrenching lyrics combined with an understated guitar/bass/drum sound describe 764-Hero, the emo-core trio from Seattle, Wash. Initially formed as a duo in 1995, the band started out with John Atkins on guitars, keyboard and lead vocals and Polly Johnson-Dickinson on drums and percussion. Atkins and Johnson-Dickinson had met while playing in other Seattle-area bands, Atkins in… Read more in Amazon's 764-HERO Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The phone number--the hotline to snitch on carpool violators in Washington state--unfortunately provides no clues as to why this unassuming Northwest rock band gets better with each new release. Having expanded to a trio on 1998's Get Here and Stay, 764-HERO continue to batter their instruments with admirable power on the cheekily titled Nobody Knows This Is Everywhere. Crammed with heartbreaking melodies and reflective lyrics ("You're overlooking skylines for a change," John Atkins sings on "Skylines"), the group is neither stylistically nor emotionally that far removed from Neil Young's sonic masterstroke, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. On "Confetti Confessional" the group even grazes actual greatness, displaying equal measures of chops and indifference. --Aidin Vaziri

5.0 out of 5 stars Best yet, by far!, April 9, 2002
By Julie Williams (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
You know, it is a wonderful thing when a band who starts out fantastic gets even better with time. 764-HERO are the case and point. While I thought it would have been impossible for them to top their last full length "Weekends of Sound", they have done it with "Nobody...". Each of the 10 songs on "Nobody..." demonstrates 764's ability to write original, intelligent and interchanging songs while keeping you moving all at once. John Atkins' vocals never sounded better and the rhythm section is more dynamic and locked than ever. Great work, a must own for all fans of their past work and for people who have never heard 764 before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid record from a solid band, August 28, 2002
By Hannah Scott (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This album really rocks. It certainly satisfies my 764 needs. The ten tunes range from hook laden rock songs to extended ballads. Their previous release with Modest Mouse and touring continues on this album withtheir new bass player is Robin P (a touring member of Modest Mouse). This record is perhaps their most accessible and polished release to date. Get it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome new album, maybe their best!, May 9, 2002
By C. Beiter "Chris" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews

OK OK, I hear y'all talkin about old albums, but let's get to the here and now. This album is solid through and through. I don't think there is a single throw away track, something that can't be said about their other works. Not only is it solid, bu there are some really exceptional songs as well. I honestly didn't expect that much, but this is probably the best "new" album I've purchased so far this year! A must for any 764-HERO fan, and definitely worth a listen for any fan of Northwest Rock. The guitars are encompassing, vocals clearer and stronger, and the songs writing is more diverse than ever before.

3.0 out of 5 stars Weekends was a party...........- you were not.
Although " You were a party " is a great track- I have to admit this album didn't stand up like Weekends of Sound.. for me. Weekends was my first purchase of 764-Hero. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars the yoke of expectation
The best thing about 764-HERO has always been the hooks. you know the kind ... Jagged-sharp, non-derivative glories that snag you like a muskelunge. Read more
