Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
To many listeners, the fact that mid-'90s cartoon rappers Onyx are back at all begs a simple question: Why? With lines like "Onyx is shoot-outs with your moms inside," you'd be hard-pressed to admit it's for the rhymes, unless you were a really huge fan the first time around. And although the beats (courtesy of Self, DaVinci, D.R. Period, and others) are serviceable in a bombastic, "grimy-crimey" kind of way, they also wouldn't sound out of place on any of ESPN's Jock Jams compilation albums. The standout clunkers are pretty painful to hear, especially "Slam Harder," with its unfortunate Welcome Back Kotter riff, and the vaguely smoothed out "Gangsta," which is yet another entry into the "me and my b!#@h" sweepstakes. The Havoc-produced "Hold Up" and Self's "Hood Beef" help the Queens rappers redeem themselves slightly, but overall the trio come off as M.O.P. without the requisite street credibility or the music for preteens to torture their parents. --Rebecca Levine

3.0 out of 5 stars Well...... What Can I Say??? It's ONYX....., July 11, 2002
By Anuro3 (New York) - See all my reviews
OK..... Off the bat I gotta say its not necessarily a bad CD. Ive been listening to them since they first came out and if your lookin for innovative new shtuff then this isnt it. But if you want straight Onyx hardcore then you shouldnt be disappointed. Heres the pro's....... Some of the trax sound like they couldve been on the first CD, so this shows they havent lost that Onyx power and ill be the first one to tell you I thought they did.

Heres the cons.... The title... I dont like it... Its kinda low to try to drain power off their first success by coming out with a BACDAFUCUP part II. The first one was a gem and they shoulda left it at that. Next is track 3 slam harder... I first heard this beat on AZ's new album Aziatic track 1. I thought it was real good but then I hear the same beat on this album... Wassup??????? Finally I didnt like how that track Slam Harder is censored on my CD when the rest of the CD is explicit. I dont get it...

But still it is Onyx... If you like their old shtuff go pick this up and give it some love... You cant be that disappointed unless you want ground breaking material.

Peace

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty appalling, January 19, 2003
By "faben15" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I bought all 3 of onyx's last albums and they are the best hip-hop albums iv'e ever heard. Every one of the albums made me nod my head violently, i bloody loved them! This time around onyx has gone puppy dog! they have totally lost their gangsta sound and instead have gone with the times just like every one else. I was appalled by this disgrace of an album, the rapping is pants, and the beats are dreadful. They aren't the hardcore, punching beats as in the other 3 albums, instead they sound more suited to missy elliot or eve. I don't see how anyone who truly likes onyx can actually say this album is worth even 5 pence! ITS SHOCKINGLY BAD! DONT BUY IT!

4.0 out of 5 stars Onyx is back........, July 13, 2002
By A Customer
This album is not as good as their last banger of 98 Shut Em Down, or as good as the ones before that for that matter. However it has some real bangers at the beginning of the album which vary and rid till about song 7 or so, after that it gets commercial and turns to the b.s. everyone is doing today, and if you know Onyx that is NOT them. This is still better than most of the records out there right now, and can supply any Onyx fan with some old style Onyx songs through song #7, so don't sleep because there is some whack songs on here (There is still some very good ones). Onyx is not pretenders they are the Kings of this hardcore crazy stuff like they say on the album, they just need to ditch the girly songs at the end and go back to Shutting them down with the full hardcore no nonsense albums we all loved. To diss Onyx because of this would be unfair, they have done so much for the hardcore and kept it real so much that they had to eventually drop a different type of feel for some songs to appeal to the masses of today (hip POP heads), and that does really suck to a hardcore Onyx fan. All and all if you aint down with these real cats then don't even bother listening to the first 7 songs, cop it for the commercial joints toward the end that you will enjoy. Onyx fans cop this for the 5 rugged songs that made Onyx famous and the ones we love to get wild too. Onyx is back, they can stay, peace.
