As the founder of Trailer Records and a sometime sideman to
Greg Brown and Dave Moore, David Zollo is accustomed to aiding others in the eastern Iowa folk and rock scenes. But the piano man and former leader of High and Lonesome deserves a share of the spotlight for
The Big Night, his third solo effort and a satisfying collection of red-blooded roots rock and blue-eyed soul. Up front, the rollicking "While You Undress" and "Why Don't You Stop Me Now" make a swaggering sandwich of the steady-rolling "Eye of the Needle." Then, like a 5th-inning rain delay, a couple of overlong ballads sap the momentum generated by more rewarding rock numbers such as "Get Away" (cowritten by
Bo Ramsey and
Kevin Gordon). But Zollo bounces back at album's end with the jangle twang of "Respect (Ain't a One-Way Street)," the well-sung waltz "Take Me Away," and the smoky closer "Driftwood from Kerry."
