Editorial Reviews

About the Artist

At eighteen, Nick Moss played bass along side his brother, Joe, as a Ribtip in Buddy Scott’s band. At twenty, he was touring the country with Jimmy “Fast Fingers” Dawkins. At twenty one, Nick replaced Calvin “Fuzz” Jones (the longtime bassist for Muddy Waters) in the Legendary Blues Band. Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, the then leader of the band, soon moved Nick into the lead guitarist position, where he stayed for more than two years. While on tour in Europe for a Muddy Waters tribute, Willie recommended Nick to the legendary Jimmy Rogers who was heading back to the U.S. early for a tour of his own. Nick joined Jimmy’s band and held the coveted guitar spot for three years until the urge to set out on his own began. With the encouragement of Jimmy and many club owners, Nick started his band, Nick Moss & the Flip Tops, and continues his busy touring schedule today. Having just released his second CD, Got A New Plan, Nick is receiving rave reviews of the new recording as well as his live performances across the U.S.

Product Description

Nick Moss has his priorities straight—on the bandstand and in the studio. Having toured extensively as a member of the Legendary Blues Band and with the late Chicago master Jimmy Rogers before setting out on his own, Nick soaked up the right influences during his formative years to keep the classic Windy City sound alive and kicking. His brand of blues is resolutely traditional in scope and permeated in rich, ears-open ensemble playing, yet his youth and enthusiasm keep things lively and contemporary. Nick keeps his guitar work precisely to the point and razor-sharp, his vocals are confident and convincing, and he’s a prolific songwriter. His debut album First Offense was uncommonly solid, and the impressively varied Got A New Plan promises to further spread the word that Nick Moss is a young Chicago bluesman worth watching and hearing. —Bill Dahl

4.0 out of 5 stars A Generous Helping of Chicago Blues, October 14, 2006
By Boston Bluesman (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews

Clocking in at almost 65 minutes and 14 songs this is a generous helping helping of some of the best modern Chicago Blues that is being made today. When I first got this album I liked it. Now that I have had it for a way I love it. Some of the highlights of the album include 'My Daddy was Right', 'Work Your Hips', 'Poison Ivy' and the closing instrumental '(Kind of) Ghetto'. The Flip Tops are a great band and Nick Moss is the real deal. Their most recent studio album Sallie Mae was nominated for blues album of the year and is one of my favorite albums period. If you like the blues and in particular Chicago style of the blues then check out Nick and the boys. Buy this album - You will not be disappointed.

After listening to this album for a couple of years now and having the pleasure to listen to other offerings from the Nick Moss catalog I gotta say I love this album. This is my favorite Nick Moss album and an absolute gem of a blues album period. If you are looking for something new and enjoy Chicago style blues buy this album.
