Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Recorded at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1981, this made-for-Canadian-TV concert special could be subtitled "The Funky Dizzy." With his four-piece band, he hips his way through updated--and now dated, truth be told--versions of old hits and new untitled instrumentals. Not that hearing Dizzy backed by funk bass and wah-wah guitar isn't a pretty groovy experience, because it is. Who knew "Night in Tunisia" could groove the way it does here? Although novice fans might be disappointed, check this baby out if you want to hear Diz keeping up with the times and, for the most part, succeeding. --Kristian St. Clair

Product Description
One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time, Dizzy Gillespie dazzled the world with his talent as one of the pioneers of be-bop and Latin jazz, but with his puffed-out cheeks, bent trumpet and quick wit, he also was a great showman. Here he demonstrates his dazzling style as he bops, scats, croons and dances his way through a collection of his music, including "The Truth," "A Night in Tunisia" and "Dizzy's Blues." Dizzy Gillespie (Trumpet, Vocals), Ed Cherry (Guitar), Michael Howell (Bass), Thomas Campbell (Drums).

I first came across this on the performance channel and was totally blow away with the fresh conceptions of Dizzy's old classics, it groooves! Ed Cherry takes a stunningly simplistic 12 bar blues solo, Michael Howell slaps and walks on Night in tunisia, Dizzy sings the blues and squeezes em out of his horn with the confident aplomb that's intrinsic to his nature as a master. My only complaint is that it is cut, as there is no drum solo. Apart from that, if you like latin, funk, soul and blues all rolled into one, this is the baaadass bag!
