5.0 out of 5 stars Chisel at their bestest, April 9, 2004
By Michael J Harrington (Phoenix, Arizona USA) - See all my reviews
This band is still fresh, focused and had the best grip I have EVER heard on great pop-pub rock in the WORLD. I was fortunate enough to have lived in Sydney in the 1990's, and would have never heard of this great band otherwise (even though it was way past their break up). What AMAZED me is that CHISEL might as well be a Beatles or Doors, just by the fact that how popular they are with the radio and fans TODAY.

Anyhow, this CD really captures them at their radio-best, and will have you singing along in no time. The one to get for a more complete collection can be found on www.whammo.com.au, which is a double CD set that really covers them better than this 'hits' CD. In Aussie, this CD would be called 'Gold Chisel' - which is what got me hooked on to these rock heros in the first place!!!!

For those who have not heard the sounds of Chisel - Jimmy Barnes with a 1 quart of vodka rock scream and Ian Moss with a rock-pop sensibility that most would die for - well, you are just missing out on one of the greatest rock bands EVER. Mind you, I am relatively new to CC, but I fell in love almost too quickly. Yep, they have their rough and bland ends here and there that sound just a bit too 70-80's, but when it comes to crafting a GREAT party rocker or ballad, CC is IT. Bottom line is that these guys just really deserve a listen, as I cannot say they 'sound like' so-and-so. What I can say is that the sounds they make are ones that most folk in the US would probably really like....a lot.

I am proud to be one of the few 'yanks' giving this music a major thumbs up...moved 'back' in 1998, but miss the great land that is Australia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chisel Forever, August 19, 2002
In a thousand years from now when ET and his mates finally arrive on planet earth it will be to pick up a copy of a Cold Chisel CD. Cold Chisel are world famous in Australia and New Zealand. This is a true Rock band from the 70s, 80s and the music is timeless, it just gets better an better and manages to stand out from all the nameless trash from todays electronic, techno bands. Do yourself a favour and get some Chisel, you will never regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Down under legends get the two disc best of treatment., January 3, 2008
Cold Chisel were legends of the Australian pub rock scene, workhorses who toured the length and breadth of the sunburned country, as we say down here. And this double disc collection pretty much sums up the reasons for their name still being revered many moons later.

The collection kicks off Standing on the Outside, one of the hits the band had in their native Australia and things proceed from there, the bands pub fare oscillating between semi cheesy balladeering (When The War Is Over) to bog standard soporific pop (My Baby) to rockin' out in the backroom numbers like Cheap Wine, You Got Nothing I Want and Yakuza Girls. The ability of almost-a-singer Jimmy Barnes to perform a nasal tinged mellow style on tunes such as Star Hotel (written about an anti-establishment riot at a hotel in Newcastle, Australia) through to outright screaming on the aforementioned You Got Nothing I Want was a real boon for the band as it allowed them to perform wastrel bar fly reminiscing songs like Breakfast at Sweethearts to boogie infused numbers so loved by many Australian hard edged bands such as on the numbers Bow River and Rising Sun.

Not to mention the overarching presence of Khe Sanh at the end of disc one, a tune written by the bands keyboardist about a Vietnam War veteran whose life has been somewhat derailed by his experiences in the Vietnam War. A song that would just about have to be on every juke box in Australia from the time of it's release to the time of writing. A song almost bigger than the band and one that probably would of been a millstone around their neck had they not written earlier and later hits to prevent their own career being derailed by it's intelligent and insightful broodings.

And that's just a description of disc one!

Though truth be told this band, however great at addressing differing styles probably is best serviced by a single disc collection, and one exists in the Gold collection. So the need and presence of the second disc here is really only for those people who not only want the hits but pretty much want every good song the band ever produced without having to trawl through their back catalogue to make up their own collection. Not that it's not a decent enough collection of songs but the more concise Gold best of is probably your best bet to get all the salient tracks on one hit on a more manageable single disc.

Recommended for those who want more of the story than Gold provides but don't want to invest in the entire catalogue.

Pretty handy liner notes too..
