Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
Stay connected with your buddies while hiking on the trail, riding the ski lift, or exploring other locations within a 2-mile window with this pair of GMRS540 two-way radios. Boasting a smaller range than many of Uniden's other two-way radios, the GMRS540s are particularly ideal for casual communications, such as keeping in touch with pals at the ballpark, rather than strenuous activities that might require a lifesaving response.

Each radio features 22 channels (8 GMRS and 14 FRS) and 38 CTCSS privacy codes, along with a voice-activated transmitter that enables hands-free communication when teamed with an optional headset and mic (sold separately). The impressive range of channels and privacy codes gives you several communication options, ensuring that you can almost always talk with friends or family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal (radios must be set on the same channel and code to communicate). It's easy to browse for channels thanks to the channel scan feature, which looks for active signals while you view the display, and the monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given frequency. And talking on the radio couldn't be simpler--just hit the PTT button when you're ready to transmit. It's important to note that the transmission range will vary depending on the channel and the surrounding terrain.

Each GMRS540 radio also receives seven NOAA National Weather Service channels along with emergency/weather alerts. When in emergency/weather alert mode, the system functions as it does in GMRS/FRS mode, but also monitors the selected channel for tornado, thunderstorm, tsunami, and other weather warnings. When using the weather function, users can't receive GMRS communications, however.

The radios also include such features as a backlit LCD display with a battery strength meter, a keypad lock that keeps you from accidentally pressing buttons at the wrong time (such as when a radio is in your pocket), a headset jack, your choice of five different call tones, and an auto squelch function that shuts off weak transmissions and unwanted noise when you've reached your range limit. And no worries about running out of power too quickly, as the radios run for around 55 hours each on three AA batteries, and are also recharge-capable when teamed with optional NiMH battery packs and charging cradles (sold separately). The entire bundle, which includes two belt clips for efficient transport, is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

What's in the Box

3.0 out of 5 stars Not 5-mile GMRS, August 21, 2002
By A Customer
This listing is incorrect. These are 1/2 watt, 2-mile units,
even in GMRS mode. The description says 5 miles in GMRS mode.
I returned the units untested when I learned this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice product for the money, January 28, 2003
By A Customer
I picked up a pair of these and they seem to be pretty nice radios for the money. The subcodes are compatible with the Motorola, and the range similar to other FRS products. I have never tested GMRS range. The weather alert is a nice feature. I have a couple issues with the product, the volume is too low, which is offset by having the mic gain too high, so the radio works well with its pair, but people other brands of radios may not be very loud, and others brands may have trouble understanding you when you speak 1 inch from the mic (speak further away). Also the squelch release is slower than Motorolas and Kenwoods, so the first thing people say may get cut off. Still not a bad radio for the price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disapointing, December 4, 2003
By D. Madden "dandytennis" (White Lake, MI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Bought four of these this past summer. Best range we've experienced is about 1 mile. That was once and the planets must have all been aligned "just perfectly". Usually get only a 1/3 to 1/2 mile. Two of the four units lately are so staticy and garbled you can't carry on a conversation. As soon as I get a chance their getting shipped back to Uniden under warranty.
