Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
As could be ascertained from songs like "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)" and "Undercova Funk," the keyword for the nugget-filled Undercover Brother soundtrack is funk. In other words, prominently twanging bass lines, swinging saxophones and horns, and syncopated gymnastics abound on this instant party mix. Whether political (James Brown, Gil Scott-Heron), empowering women (Kool & the Gang, Cheryl Lynn), or championing good old-fashioned love (the O' Jays), the choice cuts included are timeless and (mostly) not too overplayed. Only when the album tries to modernize these classics does it lose its freshness. Snoop Dogg's version of "Undercova Funk" is successful thanks to guests like Bootsy Collins, but Lil' J's 2002 version of "I Need Luv" drags aimlessly for over six minutes, and the "Theme from Undercover Brother" is a pale cool-cat imitator. Nevertheless, the album is undoubtedly a perfect funk compilation for any occasion--just add grooviness and stir. --Annie Zaleski

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby, Sometimes It's Too Much Funk for My Own ... Self, June 11, 2002
The hysterical movie has given us a great supply of classic funk in this soundtrack. Overall the funk selections make this soundtrack quite similar to the awesome "Pure Funk" series of various artist collections. However, there are a few surprises which make this soundtrack worthy even if you already have the "Pure Funk" discs, like Gil Scott-Heron's street masterpiece "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," Carl Carlton's groovy "She's a Bad Mama Jama," and Cheryl Linn's classic disco jam "Got to Be Real," the originals of which are rather hard to track down. Another bonus is the new title theme in which Bootsy Collins and company bring Snoop Dogg back to his true roots in the heavy uncut funk. Add to that the classic funks jams by The Commodores, Wild Cherry, and Earth Wind & Fire and you got enough funk to become a swingin' secret agent yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars SOLID!, June 6, 2002
By A Customer
This soundtrack is amazing! It is almost as amazing as the movie. Every song on this soundtrack has that 70's groove that nothing can nothing can duplicate. Even if youre not a huge fan of the movie (which you should be), the music is incredible. Once you've had Undercover Brother, there is no other.
