Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's high-definition-ready 36HF72 TV is poised to render vivid, detailed images from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. The 36-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks cool, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity. A special 16:9 mode displays a 16:9 high-definition source (full 1080i) with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to maintain aspect ratio while wasting no screen lines on the bars.

Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), IDSC II performs frame, line, and pixel doubling to create progressive, full-frame images. Toshiba's motion-adaptive Hyper Progressive Scanning system analyzes 13,600 screen points to smooth edges and eliminate stair-stepping artifacts. The result is a smooth, filmlike image. (IDSC II passes through 1080i images without alteration.) A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. Meanwhile, dynamic Quadruple Focus improves edge and corner focus, so you can enjoy legible text and graphics even at the outside of the screen.

Advanced velocity-scan modulation also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). The 10-watts-per-channel 36HF72 offers two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. SRS 3D Sound simulates surround sound from any stereo audio, while Toshiba's Sub-Bass System (SBS) heightens the impact of low-frequency audio.

Product Description

Movie lovers, rejoice! This Toshiba FST Pure 36HF72 television delivers everything you've been dreaming of. FST Pure Fine Pitch Flat Picture tube delivers increased viewing angle along with the enhanced picture linearity necessary to produce accurate life-like images. Cinema Mode identifies original film-based content from DVDs and then reassembles the frame sequence to more precisely reproduce the original 24-frame film-based material. This process eliminates artifacts and results in sharp, accurate full-frame progressive images. SRS 3D allows the viewer to enjoy an enhanced home theater experience without the connection of additional speakers. And with Direct Video Input Selection inputs can now be directly selected from the remote's numbered keypad without scrolling through all the inputs. Superb performance and comfort - that's what marks this TV.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected..., September 3, 2002
By A Customer
I initially was excited buying this product. It has component inputs and supports 480p and 1080i, so the picture should be great from an HD source. However as soon as I plugged it in, I started noticing problems.

First, just like the other reviewer for this television, when i play DVD movies, it bows in the middle of the image. Very strange, and yes very annoying. I tried international DVD's and American DVD's and same thing. The picture was very good, but NOT GREAT. The whole reason you want to go to HD is for the superiour picture, and I just didn't get that "wow" effect.

Second, every twenty minutes or so the screen goes blank and then comes back after a couple of seconds. Again, very strange. This happens when watching TV, DVD's or playing video games.

I have called Toshiba phone support and they just said that they haven't heard of these problems, and to return the product. Well, reading the other reviewer from Texas, they are going to hear more of these problems.

I am going to return this TV and most likely also go with the Sony Wega XBR. Its much more expensive, but at least I know it wont have these problems. I have been a loyal Toshiba customer for several years, I love there products. This is the first television I bought from them however, and I am dissappointed. I wanted this to be so much more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall, a nice TV., August 29, 2002
By A Customer
Have had this set for 4 months and have been very pleased with its performance. Was disappointed by the ommission of two small things: not enough memory to label each channel on the on screen display, and the clock must be reset if the power is lost even for 1/2 a second. Read a another negative review here...have had no such problems with mine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantasic picture with some work, January 24, 2003
By "athelstanent" (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This is great TV, but only after I worked to find how to adjust the picture in diagnostics mode. In that mode I was able to fix all of the picture issues (bowing, centering, ect.) If you are not careful the adjustments can damage the TV. Get proffesional help if you are worried.
