Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Brimming with high-tech features, Toshiba's 50H72 projection set is ready to render vivid, smooth, and detailed video signals from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. Topping the great features is IDSC Pro, which coverts all 480i and 480p signals (as from progressive-scan DVD players and DTV set-top boxes) to 540p. Since 540p and 1080i share the same scan rate, the 50H72 establishes a single focus point, eliminating focus compromise. Frame, line, and pixel doubling are all used to create progressive, full-frame images from standard interlaced signals (such as composite-video signals from DVD players, VCRs, and camcorders).

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter provides more accurate processing of RF and composite-video signals for a sharper, cleaner picture. This advanced filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricate scenes. The standard 4:3 aspect-ratio set offers two widescreen modes: anamorphic (which creates black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, but devotes all 1,080 scan lines to creating the image) and letterboxed (which devotes some of the scan lines to creating the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen). The letterboxed mode, while offering lower image resolution, preserves the screen against undesirable "burn-in" of the black bars.

The set's TruView feature, by combining several enhancements (black level expansion, fine white, flesh tone correction, and color detail enhancer), automatically displays more accurate picture and color details. New to this model is HD Dynamic Contrast, which continually analyzes picture information and sharpens and deepens those parts of the picture with the most detailed information. For audio, the 50H72 offers SRS 3D Sound Field Expander, which creates a wide, three-dimensional sound field from the television's internal speaker. StableSound maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal, and Toshiba's Sub Bass System (SBS) boosts a program's low-end audio for heightened dramatic impact. This set comes with an illuminated universal remote control.

Product Description

Movie lovers, rejoice! This Toshiba TheaterView 50H72 television delivers everything you've been dreaming of. IDSC Pro advanced digital scan conversion system utilizing line doubling, frame doubling, pixel doubling, and double sampling for the best possible progressive scan images allows the TV to accept and display both progressive scan and HD video signals. By combining the Black Level Expansion, Fine White, Flesh Tone Correction and Color Detail Enhancer, the TruView system automatically reproduces more accurate picture detail and true color. The SurfLock function enables you to see the current channel number and logo on screen while storing the tuner position in memory by pressing the channel return button and holding it down for one second. The viewer is then free to surf through all available channels and return to the original channel at any time simply by pressing the channel return button. Superb performance and comfort - that's what marks this TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars great buy, July 29, 2002
By "d00fuss" (Glen Burnie, MD United States) - See all my reviews
I was torn between a 50" Sony TV and this Toshiba until I saw them side by side in the store.. The Toshiba has a far clearer picture. I also have a Toshiba DVD player (2 years old) and the picture is perfect. The salesman in the store said that a lot of people think the Toshibas have a better picture than anyone else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba 50h72, October 20, 2002
By A Customer
Very nice picture. One of the best I have seen on a big screen. Viewing angle is good, unlike some of the other projection TV's out there. The only complaint I have, and it is a very minor one, is that you have to be using HD1 or HD2 (COLORSTREAM) hooked up to a device that has component video (RGB) to use the Zoom, Letterbox, etc features. You cannot ZOOM, for example, on satellite or cable reception to get rid of those annoying black bars when they are being broadcast. In the literature it isn't all that clear, or I didn't read well enough. If I would have know that, I might have opted for the wide screen model for a few hundred dollars more. All in all it is a great TV. Perfect size for any living room. I give it 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to others.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Worst Conceivable Customer Service, September 5, 2006
By Jay Bear Books (Easton, PA) - See all my reviews
In December 2002 I purchased a 50H72 Television. Six months later, in June 2003 the entire screen became green. The authorized Toshiba repair company came out and two months later still could not fix the TV. After numerous calls to Toshiba they finally agreed to replace the TV in July 2003. In July 2006, the TV began blacking out periodically, without warning. The same authorized Toshiba repair company came out and in September 2006 said the TV was damaged because of a power surge. I explained that the line was surge protected and other equipment also operated on the line, none of which was damaged. I was then informed it did not matter because the product could not be repaired because Toshiba no longer makes the parts. I again called Toshiba the their customer service was offensive at best, when I could get someone on the phone because I was repeated told someone would call me back and never did. Finally, I was told Toshiba refused to do anything whatsoever. When I told the "customer service" representative Tori, I wanted to file a complaint I was told, "you do whatever you have to do". In a nutshell, the product was horrible and only outmatched by the worst customer service I have ever experienced.
