Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The price is the only thing small about JVC's MX-G500 stereo system. It includes a three-disc carousel changer, a dual-well, full-logic cassette deck, and an FM-AM tuner with 45 presets (30 FM, 15 AM), as well as 80 watts per channel for the speakers and a rafter-rattling 40 watts per channel for the system's two 5.6-inch subwoofers. The speakers, with their red cones and silver grilles, are the focal point of the MX-G500. Each speaker uses a 5.125-inch cone woofer, a 2-inch cone tweeter, and an additional 5.6-inch cone subwoofer with four-layer voice coils for extra efficiency. The subwoofers even get their own separate level control.

The CD player offers play exchange, letting you swap two discs while the third plays, and 32-track programming. A single-bit digital-to-analog converter delivers music with clarity and punch. CD synchro-start recording makes copying discs to cassette a cinch. Three preset and three manual equalizer curves and four simulated surround sound settings (dance, club, hall, stadium) let you tailor the system's sound to any musical preference. The MX-G500 comes with a full-function remote control.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a great stereo system, October 17, 2002
By Steve (Columbus, OH USA) - See all my reviews
The sound from this stereo is unreal. I compared the MX-G500 to the more expensive JVC "gigatube" models at the stores, and this one actually has better bass at low volumes than they do; the subwoofers are side-firing and very effective. And the mid-range and treble are excellent, also. Controls are easy to learn and operate, as is the remote. Am I partial to JVC? Not really, as I would have bought whatever stereo sounded the best to me at the store, and this one did. One more thing I look for is how well the stereos receive stations inside the stores: if they have trouble tuning into strong stations, then forget it; I'm not buying it. This one receives excellently. The ONLY thing that bugs me is the "display" demonstration that it goes into whenever the power is interupted. But the flashing lights and Buck Rodgers effects can be cancelled with just the touch of a button. If anyone out there is looking for a great shelf system, I recommend this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ugly looks, ugly sound, January 14, 2003
By "swayinotis" (Hillsborough, NC United States) - See all my reviews
After reading the glowing reviews here I decided to give this glorified boom box a try. I was not impressed. It's absolutely ugly, it's big, and the sound [is horrible]. This is all fairly subjective stuff so take my opinion for what it is worth.

I just didn't like it. It's loud but that's about it. It sounded OK at lower volumes. The biggest problem I had was with the lack of depth. It was all high end, no mid range whatsoever. The sound presets (Hall, Rock, Stadium, Dance etc) were just lousy. Half of them sounded exactly the same. There was no richness there. The bass boost didn't really help, either. With no way to really control bass and treble the sound was just flat.

I ended up sending it back and getting a Kenwood NV-301. Am I glad I did. What a difference. It's stylish, elegant and it sounds 10 times better than the JVC. It has CD text which is great for all the CD-Rs you have burned, you can adjust the bass and treble, and it has an input for a subwoofer, something the JVC didn't have. Adding an inexpensive subwoofer from some place like Cambridge Soundworks will really make this thing sound even better.

Overall the JVC is just a giant boom box with boom box sound. Its THD is 10%! The Kenwood's THD (total harmonic distortion) is .09% which makes it sound richer. The Kenwood is cheaper, too.

I hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has to be Heard to be believed!, December 11, 2002
By E. Voorhies (United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I heartily agree with the other reviews of this unit. I have done much comparing of mini systems in the last 2 months and this one comes out on top by a long shot! I have been performing, selling, recording or listening to music for 30 years and I am not easily impressed with stereo systems.....but this one has me reeling! Not only is the bass response awesome, but this unit has a very full and spatial sounding mid-range which provides a very warm and "live" effect when listening...even without the surround sound settings! I would have never believed how deep and clear the bass is on this unit.....or how powerful it was.....unless i had brought it home.
Please don't be misled and spend a lot more money on a mini system before you listen to this one! All these great reviews are not in the least bit exaggerated.
