Look no further than Sega Sports' NFL 2K3 if you're seeking a more than worthy alternative to the established Madden football franchise. The game's superb graphics alone are enough to draw in any fan, but its in-depth gameplay and ESPN broadcast presentation easily rank this as the finest football game Sega has released to date.

Thanks to its smarter-than-your-average artificial intelligence, NFL 2K3 sports a somewhat steep learning curve that requires sound football simulation instincts. Knowing your team's strengths and weaknesses will ultimately be of benefit if you hope to win at the game's advanced levels. Be prepared to mix up your play calling and make adjustments, instead of thinking the same old reliable plays will get the job done. Of course, practice mode is always there if you need to work the kinks out of your game plan and master the multitude of offensive and defensive sets at your disposal.

Graphically, sports games don't come much better looking than NFL 2K3. Among the highlights: player animations are amazingly realistic and lifelike, and a wide array of facial emotions appear that are relative to game scenarios. Stadiums are painstakingly recreated to take on an almost postcard feel, and replays access a wide variety of angles that put you right on the field or in the stands.

One area in which NFL 2K3 easily aces the Madden games is with its game commentary. As part of the game's ESPN broadcast presentation, announcers Dan Stevens and Peter O'Keefe call every bit of the action in varied detail. The pair is far removed from tired and stale Maddenisms, offering worthwhile play breakdowns, player assessments, and quips that actually don't make you wince (at least not too often). Stevens and O'Keefe, not to mention the crowd, will let you hear about it when you bite it on the field. --Larry White

I have, up until 2 months ago, never liked football games. So many plays, confusing, smart CPU, etc. I bought my xbox 2 months ago. I thought I should give football another try. I have played Madden 2003, NFL Blitz 2003, NFL Fever 2003, NFL Gameday 2003 and of course, Sega NFL 2K3. I thought Blitz was just plain dumb. Gameday looks like a early 90's game, and boring. Fever is coming on strong but still has something, I don't know what it is, that it really doesn't let you enjoy it. Madden and Sega 2k3 are pretty similar. You can "ask" madden what play to run. On Sega you got to tap the A twice to select a random play. Graphics are better by far on Sega. Fun to play? Sega slightly above madden. Comments, options, practice, sound?, Sega gets my vote. On a scale of 1 to 10 this are my final answers. Blitz gets a 5. Gameday gets a 5. Fever gets a 7.5. Madden gets a 9. And Sega 2K3 gets a 10+. Trust me. Buy Sega 2K3. Plain and simple...THE best NFL game out there.

According to Amazon's information, this game is 1-2 players, recievers cannot be sent into motion and passes are slow and lofty. All three are untrue. This game is a four player game, receivers can be sent into motion with the tap of the left stick, and using maximum passing, one can get both bullets and lobs. And for people who say its too difficult to catch passes, the catch feature can be increased in the options:difficulty menu. I have found the game to be much better with this change. It was amazing before, and I can't put it down now. No doubt, the best football game on the market. If u aren't sure, maddden, 2k3, or fever, there is no question. Get 2k3

This game is nothing like Madden from EA sports. It is much, much more realistic than this years madden. These are some of the things I noticed in NFL 2K3 that I never saw in Madden. Unlike in Madden, blindly throwing the ball 20 yards down field results in many interceptions, cornerbacks and linebackers bump and check recievers to slow down routes, and good veteran offensive tackles will do anything to protect the qb, including holding and literally rolling into the rushers to take them out. You can also setup defensive matchups. If you want Urlacher to cover Faulk out of the backfield he can do it. The defensive AI is so good, sometimes I find myself preparing gameplans against teams like the Bears and Steelers. Good AI really makes trick plays that much more fun because it's that much harder to execute them prefectly against a smarter enemy.

In terms of being better, I think defense and franchise mode are the only categories where 2K3 is better than Madden. Coincidentally, these two areas are specifically what hard-core gamers critique the most. And that's just it, it's a hard-core version of football. It doesn't have any of the fun new play modes that keep me playing Madden way past the Superbowl. And 2k3 is also really hard on higher settings. On the lower settings it's a cake-walk like any other football game so it's no fun.

If you don't know how zones work or how different line techniques affect a game you will probably get lost like me.In Madden, the play call mode starts with several basic formations, like 4-3 or nickel, and then expands upon that. The playcalling mode with 2K3 is probably what it loooks like in a real play book. There are dozens of so-called "basic" formations, and then there are dozens of versions of those formations. Many formations look exactly the same, but one might have a blitzing safety while the other has the safety dropping back into coverage. Many times I have accidentally called a nickel blitz when the offense has a 5-WR package and have been burned by deep passes to open recievers. Also, I think you have to play as the quarterback in games. I really like to run the ball, but I don't like passing because of the constrictive view of the field. In Madden, you can call a play and let the AI do the passing while you do the running. I haven't found a way to let the AI take over the qb duties.

2K3 is better than madden in terms of providing a real football experience. If Sega could just make more intuitive play-call menus and add just a couple extra game play modes it would be alot more enjoyable.
