With Transition Networks' IBM 5250 Media Converters, cost-effective integration of UTP and fiber optics in IBM 5250 networks is easier than ever before. These devices allow extending distances between the terminals and the processing unit, integrate fiber optics with existing cabling. A minimal propagation delay of only 100ns ensures that time critical operations are not affected. They convert clumsy and expensive twinax cable (using a balun) to UTP. The use of UTP in the IBM 5250 network allows for a standardized cable type, more cable flexibility and higher port density. Used in pairs, this media converter can extend distances between two twisted pair nodes that are configured in a star topology up to 2, 000 meters over multimode fiber or up to 8, 000 meters over single mode fiber.
