5.0 out of 5 stars The Joint is REALLY Jumpin'!, April 26, 2003
By "verdifan" (North Arlington, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent 3-CD set at a super, super price. Fats Waller's skill as a stride pianist was unparalleled, and he really shines on this collection, with the help of some very able musicians, including the irrepressible Herman Autrey, whose soaring trumpet is the perfect complement to Waller's nimble playing. The group totally tears up Twelfth Street Rag and Why Do I Lie to Myself About You, and their joy in playing is so infectious that it will surely bring a smile to your face (I know it does to mine).
Waller, who eschewed sentimentality in his music, and became a very funny man while doing so, nonetheless releases lots of emotion with a straight version of Tell Me With Your Kisses; the gorgeous notes cascading from his piano on this tune are nothing short of astounding. A great talent and a great character who lived large and died too young, Fats Waller left us a legacy of wonderful music, and much of it is right here in this collection for all to enjoy.
