Amazon.com Product Description
Football junkies have long been accustomed to loving gridiron video games while tolerating their weaknesses. We appreciate the fact that developers try to incorporate genuine college or pro atmospheres into the games, but it drives us nuts when the fight songs are incorrect, the out patterns are automatic, or the running game is unrealistically easy or hard.

But then along comes NCAA Football 2003 by EA Sports, a game so good that after a few weeks, even your dog will wonder why you never find the time to communicate anymore. Start with the AI--by far the best yet in a college game. Defenses not only react to your play calling and adjust their strategies as the game evolves, but they expertly disguise their coverages and swarm to the ball with speed and decisiveness. In addition, your computer opponent actually makes intelligent clock decisions when time is running out (shocking!). The running game at times is a bit easy on the lower difficulty levels (especially if a back like Oregon's Onterrio Smith has the ball), but that's why they made All-American and Heisman levels.

The graphics, as are typical in football video games over the last couple of years, are extremely good, and the between-play animations provide extra spark to the rivalries (taunting runs rampant). But the graphics aren't the star of the show--it's the dynasty mode, stupid. With enough special features and stat categories to keep college football hopheads happy for months--including a comprehensive recruiting engine, a customizable intro screen that features your favorite school's colors and fight song, and a Trophy Room that displays all your bowl and rivalry game hardware--NCAA Football 2003 just might make fans forget the depressing length of the off-season. --Rivers Janssen

Pros:

  • Terrific AI
  • Fans of almost any Division I program will be happy with the team-specific features
  • Passing engine actually requires you to read defenses intelligently

Cons:

  • Commentary is a bit predictable

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GRAND DADDY OF THEM ALL!, July 25, 2002
I've been an NCAA football fan for a long time, and this year's edition of EA's college football simulator has improved on last years if you can believe it.

First of all, let's talk about all the new bells and whistle's. EA has done a great job in bringing in the pagentry of college football by adding 3-D Cheerleaders, a trophy case, more emphasis on rivalry games, and team introductions prior to each game. Certainly these additions are not needed, but they bring the game to life and help differ NCAA from Madden or any other NFL video game.

Some other improvements I've noticed is the addition of Touchdown Jesus and the Green Jersey's for Notre Dame, more fight songs than ever, an improved Play Action Pass (it's no longer sack action), and improved A.I. on both sides of the ball. Add in a coach's report card, improved menu's in the dynasty mode, deeper dynasty stat tracking (everything from attendance at games to goals on the coach's contract are recorded), and improved commentary from the ESPN team, and you have a hit.

As far as the game play itself, it's up to the usual standards. The passing game doesn't seem to be quite as easy as last years version, due to the improved AI. The option works well and the other parts of the running game are great. I LOVE the gang tackling and once again, the improved AI is a godsend. Not perfect, but it's getting there.

Honestly, I was HIGHLY impressed with this year's version of the game. All the additions mentioned above have rounded out an already good game and made it truly great. If you love college football and video games, you can't go wrong with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars You have to have this game, July 25, 2002
To be honest, I was a huge fan of NCAA 2002... lots of fun and one of the few games I played for the entire year. Now that NCAA 2003 has arrived, get ready for even more fun. The new version has some nice additions. Several new mascots have beenl added including Virginia's, Maryland's, Akron's and more. Cheerleaders have been added and serve the purpose of filling in for schools that do not have mascots.

The game play is improved as well. The opposing teams defense actually picks poorly thrown passes making offense much more realistic. You used to be able to thread the needle a little top easily, that is all gone now. You, and the other team, can also pick deflected passes... another nice addition. The game play, over all, is just much faster. Players of past NCAA versions will need a couple of games to adjust to the new speed, but all-in-all the games realism has come close to perfection.

Creating your own University in Dynasty mode is also a nice touch. Naming your school, picking its colors, logo, uniforms, location, stadium are really nice features. The addition of rivalry mode is also nice, the crowd seems a little more revved and the players do as well.

As for the crowd, they actually boo when you play poorly or the other team plays well. However, you are rewarded with cheers when you perform well. Past versions had the crowd only cheering when you scored. Finally, the announcing is slightly improved as well... with long runs being called with a 30, 20, 10, 5, touchdown! Nice touch.

All-in-all the graphics are phenominal, the number of schools (117 Div. 1A schools, and several 1AA) are great, the stadium replications are perfect and the fight songs are terrific. Simply put, get this game... design your own out of conference schedule and lead your boys to the National title... Run out and get it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars EA does it again, July 26, 2002
By "cubbiesrule" (Cubville, USA) - See all my reviews
...I did not think EA could improve upon NCAA Football 2002. Well, EA has proven me wrong once again. There's simply not a flaw in this game. All the new animations, AI, and band cadences are fantastic. For instance, the drum solos in the middle of plays make the atmosphere all the more realistic. The pass defense has been tweaked to frustrating perfection...we now have to read the defense in mid-play instead of choosing a receiver to throw to before the snap. And don't get me started on the beauty of the juke move. Finally, my favorite gameplay addition. After years of screaming at my TV after another sack, play-action passes are now just that. They're no longer play-action SACK, like they were in 2002. Kudos to EA for tweaking their weaknesses. Finally, the revamped dynasty mode is awesome. I love the ability to tweak my own non-conference scheldule so I can play either powerhouses or cupcakes. The rivalry mode and trophy room option is a great way to lose a friendship after an overtime michigan/ohio state game. This is the best college football game ever made. Buy it. And buy it now.
