5.0 out of 5 stars Superdrag kicks arse again...Knoxville style, July 11, 2002

As the sticker says (gotta love thier stickers) "If you don't like Superdrag, you don't like rock n' roll".

When you get this, press track #3 1st, brilliance.

This album is thick with power chords and rockers as well as a few slower catchy tunes we're used to. One of thier harder albums. Ok so Baby.. & Stu are old, well while they sound the same as the past last recordings of these somes songs they sound somehow better here (not sure if they were redone but I'm guessing they were in some way). Anyways this album is classic Superdrag, catchy as hell. They have the knack (no pun) to craft tunes that stick in your head for days after last hearing them. If you're a fan already get this! It rocks, simply put. "The Staggering Genius" is a total slam pit song. And of course you know "Stu" rocks out. "Drag Me Closer To You" is a stomper in the vein of Kiss or Urge Overkill sorta (has a 70's hard rock feel).

If you don't know the band they are one of thee best power-pop/post-punk bands around. I don't like to compare bands really but they should be as big as Weezer (they toured with them many a time). Do yourself a favor and pick up anything you can from this band...great lyrics of melancholy, dispair, frustration, feeling alone, anger and lost loves with bursts of mania. They'll get you singing along in no time. John Davies voice is so damn good.

Other great bands in similar vein I can think of offhand are The Insomniacs, Hi-Fives, Teenage Fanclub, Wilco..dead bands like the Kinks, Big Star, Beatles, Who, Pretty Things, T-Rex, Replacements, Real Kids (well not really dead), Urge Overkill, Best Kissers in the World, etc come to mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars No vitriol for the latest 'drag disc, July 9, 2002
By A Customer
Superdrag fans rejoice! Our favorite sons from Knoxville have dropped another outstanding recording for your listening pleasure. And it is a pleasurable listen, for sure. Opening with the clever "Baby Goes to Eleven", Superdrag deliver the goods once again. "Last Call for Vitriol" contains two of the best songs I have heard this year: "The Staggering Genius" and "Feeling Like I Do". Once again, you will be wondering why commercial radio and MTV don't play the heck out of these guys. Hey, if it's this good, who cares!

Superdrag have always been able to pack three to four stunningly awesome songs on their albums, but "Last Call" is consistently the best Superdrag album, tune-by-tune. There is a warm, easy-going feel to this quite diverse recording. Elements of power pop, classic rock and country pulse throughout the 12 tracks on this disc. The two newest members, Sam and Mic, are welcome additions and their presence is definitely felt on this recording.

But the real star here is John Davis. His lyrics are clever and thoughtful. His singing on a par with so many of the greats to carry out a tune from Tennessee. You can't have power pop without killer guitar, which this album delivers in droves. Folks, whether you are new or old to Superdrag, you will enjoy "Last Call for Vitriol".

5.0 out of 5 stars New Superdrag rocks!, July 11, 2002
By A Customer
Definitely on a par with their earlier efforts, the tracks on this album contain a great deal of influence from older, paradigm-setting rock music. Listen for the Eagles and the Beatles. And be sure to set The Staggering Genius on repeat!
