5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!, December 11, 2002
By Ms Fiona Snow (Greystones, Co. Wicklow Ireland) - See all my reviews
As a native dubliner just like damien ive had the luck of hearing this album before a lot of people, and from the very first time i heard it playing in my local CD store, right up to attending his live concert this week i have ADORED this album, and every song on it.

filled with unbelievably moving lyrics and amazing guitar work, his voice is perfectly complimented by lisa's . it is impossible to categorise this CD, it ranges from close-to-silent voice only songs to rising multi layered songs, one climaxing with a moving operatic finish.

i have given this CD to everyone i know, i find no matter what their traditional musical taste everyone has loved it. BUY this CD, get him widely known, and if you ever have the chance to see him live GRAB it.

5.0 out of 5 stars beyond 5 stars..really!!, May 13, 2003
This is a truly incredible album. I have given 5 stars to albums before but now I wish I hadn't cos this album is beyond 5 stars. I was painting the house at the time when I first heard it, and had to stop and listen! It blew me away; It makes you wonder how someone could create and deliver songs of such beauty and depth armed with little more than a guitar, some stunning vocals from Damien and partner Lisa, and the occasional use of strings! Its hard to single out individual tracks as the album just flows effortlessly from track #1 to the final track but Blowers Daughter,Amie and Eskimo are my faves. I cannot recommend it highly enough, but suffice to say when my son borrowed it (without telling me!) I had withdrawal symptoms. This is a truly great album and I hope it is promoted properly in the USA so as many people as possible can hear it and buy it. Damien Rice deserves to be a massive star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Up and coming, June 6, 2003
There is no doubt that Damien Rice is an excellent songwriter and a fantastic singer. And this is one of those rare albums that you'll fall in love with after just one sitting. Although listening to the whole album in one go can be somewhat exhausting, it's worth it. The songs are a wonderful blend of genres subtley interlaced into Damien's unique style. He manages to exude a combination of total energy and total relaxation. It's the epitome of cool. It's the tension created by that blend that leaves you struggling to catch your breath at the end of the album.

As fantastic as the album is, however, it still doesn't manage to capture the feeling you get when you see him live (that's why every review here mentions his live performances). The only times I've seen Damien Rice perform were at the open mike sessions at Molloy's in Dublin, back in 2000 - and it was unbelievable. That spirit, its essence, needs to be captured before I can say give an album of his 5 stars. The reason that this has 4 is because I just don't think that this one lives up to how good he is and when one is released that does, I want to be able to give it the full 5 stars that it deserves!

On the other hand, you should buy the album to get a taste for what he's doing (and to support a fantastic musician). He is nothing but pleasure to listen to, his melodies are exquisite, his music is infinitely powerful; have a listen to Blower's Daughter and you will instantly fall in love.

I can't wait to hear his next album, but for now, I'll definitely be happy with this one. You will too.
