Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Continuing one of the most unusual careers in Hollywood, film editor-cum-scorer John Ottman (The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil) tackles this CGI-powered take on the giant mutant insect film cycle of the '50s with a massive orchestral score that's a nervous, tongue-in-cheek delight. Eschewing much of the blaring brass and shrieking strings that virtually drowned the originals in musical kitsch, Ottman serves up a bright score that occasionally tweaks the genre's origins while goosing it with some much-need humorous tension. It's the sort of deft, comic-action romp that Elfman conjured up in his early collaborations with Tim Burton, with subtle string effects mimicking the encroaching spider-freaks and brief blasts of ceremonial pomp echoing the forces of would-be security. There's some action Sturm und Drang to be sure, but Ottman throws so many curves and genre twists into his arrangements that the music takes on an almost Charles Ivesian sense of surprise and dynamics. They say drama is easy; it's comedy that's hard--Ottman bounds between both here with deceptive ease. --Jerry McCulley

2.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe..., February 12, 2003
that the closing song that played during the credits "Itsy Bitsy Spider" by Joey Deluxe is not on this CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars So stupid its funny, August 5, 2006
By Valerie (Florida) - See all my reviews
I love the movie. It's so stupid its funny. If you like funny horror movies then this movie is for you. I loved the song at the end credits. They were playing the itsy bitsy spider song. But the funny thing about it was the spiders weren't itsy bitsy. There isn't a surprise ending. It ends the way you would expect most movies to end...excpet the black guy doesn't die in this one. So if you are in the mood for a dumb movie watch it. if not find something else to do for that hour and a half.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a rip-off
This sounds very much like a knock-off from Jerry Goldsmith's 'Small Soldiers' - same kind of music and same kind of usage of it. Don't buy this cd, get 'Small Soldiers' instead
