1.0 out of 5 stars Andy Lau, Shu Qi, and Rosamund Kwan in This Terrible Sci-Fi Rip-Off, July 30, 2006
Oh please, please don't let yourself be fooled by the three names in `The Wesley's Mysterious File' cheesy sci-fi rip-off from Hong Kong. Yes, the film features Andy Lau (`Infernal Affair'), Shu Qi (`Transporter') and Rosamund Kwan (`Once Upon a Time in China' series), but none of them look truly interested in the silly roles of this `MIB'-like silly sci-fi action.

Andy Lau plays Wesley, special agent from one secret organization AAA in America, solving the special cases related to the aliens from the outer space living on earth. Before you can say Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, the film introduces another two incredible characters, the one Shu Qi plays, a beautiful FBI agent in long, white coat, and the other Rosamund Kwan plays, a beautiful alien whose eyes turn blue when she uses psychic powers.

And there are bad aliens coming from the space, and a bad US governmental agent who wants the superpower of the aliens. Most of the special effects are not special, and the dull story does not help much when talented actors like Andy Lau looks so bored throughout the film. You will also see one of the most embarrassing `bed scenes' in the movie history, where Rosamund Kwan teaches Andy Lau how to make love on her own planet. And that is not great at all.

The first part of the film is shot in San Francisco with wide-screen format. The images are beautiful, but the awful acting from the English-speaking actors ruins it, who just don't look like Americans. Sorry to add this, but things don't get better in the second half set in Hong Kong, where the fate of the whole universe is decided by bargain-basement CGI.

It is very sad to see usually delectable and lovely Rosamund Kwan who looks very tired in this messy film. What is she doing now?

3.0 out of 5 stars Hong Kong sci-fi fare..., January 9, 2005
Not as bad as they say it is, but still far from the pinnacle of your sci-fi mysteries. The worse actor here is the rotund Wong Jing, who plays a cameo, and is both unfunny and crass. Again Andy Lau gets to play the man who can do no wrong, the heroic scientist-investigator Wesley, who is part of the UN extra-terrestial department (that's what the movie says). The film is a sort of toss-up between "Men in Black" and "Terminator II"; there are good aliens (one played by Rosamund Kwan, who plays a 400-year-old blue-blooded alien) and (very) bad aliens, and there're plenty of special effects and computer morphing a la Terminator II style. The production value is admirable, but what most Western viewers won't get is the story. Shu Qi is gorgeous (as always), but even she can't give this film a 100% kudos.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly bad, May 21, 2004
By A Customer
A big fan of Shu Qi which drew me to this movie. It was a big disappointment. Highschool plays could delivery better performance in term of acting. Story line is stupid with really cheap special effects. Please save your money. I rented this movie for $1.99 and still regret the money that I spent.
